  • Banks generated N438bn from digital transactions in 2023

Banks generated N438bn from digital transactions in 2023

In 2023, digital banking channels brought in roughly N438bn for 10 financial institutions, an analysis of their annual reports has shown.

Compared to the previous year, the banking groups’ earnings from electronic transactions rose by 37.54 per cent from N318.64bn.

E-business income includes revenue from electronic channels, card products, and related services.

These channels include mobile applications, USSD channels, automated teller machines, agency banking, internet banking, point of sales payments, as well as credit and debit card transactions.

The growth in the electronic business income was driven by the increasing popularity of mobile and online banking in Nigeria.

Some of the banks’ annual reports that The PUNCH analysed were FBN Holdings, Access Holdings, Guaranty Trust Holding Company, United Bank for Africa, Zenith Bank, Wema Bank, Fidelity Bank, FCMB Group, Stanbic IBTC Holdings and Sterling Financial Holdings Company.

Leading other banks in terms of revenue from electronic banking was UBA, which raked in N125.58bn compared to N78.94bn in 2022.

Conversely, the banking group’s IT support and related expenses jumped by 148 per cent to N23.19bn from N9.32bn in the preceding year.

Access Holdings recorded N101.62bn income from its electronic business, including transactions on electronic channels, card products and related services.

That was about 70.34 per cent higher than the 2022 electronic business income.

The group’s IT and e-business expenses also rose during the period under review to N78.05bn from N44.63bn in 2022.

In its just-released audited statements, FBN Holdings reported N66.34bn as earnings from its electronic business higher than N55.09bn in the previous year.

In a statement accompanying the annual report, the bank said that electronic banking fees were a major driver of the growth of its fees and commission income.

“The underlying drivers of fees and commission were led by electronic banking fees (20.4 per cent) to N66.3bn billion, Letters of credit commission and fees (278.4 per cent) to N60.6bn, Account maintenance fees (12.3 per cent) to N22.3bn and funds transfer and intermediation fees (204.9 per cent) to N20.6bn.

“Customer acquisition drive has also been enhanced through a growing adoption across digital platforms and greater penetration of the unbanked segments through the agency banking network, further boosting financial inclusion drive.”

Also, Zenith Bank recorded N51.82bn as earnings from electronic banking fees in 2023, 13.29 per cent higher than N45.74bn in the previous year.

The bank’s spending on information and technology during this time also rose by 8.48 per cent to N33.59bn from N30.97bn in 2022.

For GTCO, the income from electronic business went up to N40.83bn from N37.74bn in the prior year, and its communications, administrative and technological-related expenses increased to N50.24bn from N42.39bn.

FCMB in 2023 recorded N17.69bn as revenue from electronic fees and commission, higher than N13.99bn in the previous year.

The bank’s spending on IT almost doubled to N16.57bn from N9.99bn.

Fidelity Bank saw its earnings from e-business rise by about 20.30 per cent to N14.03bn from N11.66bn in 2022.

The bank also increased its spending on IT significantly in 2023 as it surged by 274.73 per cent to N16.57bn from N4.42bn in the previous year.

Sterling HoldCo reported N8.588bn from e-business commissions and fees last year, higher than N7.16bn in 2022.

Wema Bank, which prides itself as the pioneer of Africa’s first fully digital bank, ALAT, saw its fees from electronic products rise to N7.35bn from N6.13bn.

Its spending on technology and alternative channels, however, declined by 1.84 per cent to N1.42bn

Of the banking groups reviewed, Stanbic IBTC Holdings’ N4.42bn income from electronic business was the least.

It was higher than N2.51bn in 2022.

In contrast, its expenditure on information technology rose to N19.34bn, indicating a 42.93 per cent increase over the previous year’s figure.

Meanwhile, the newly released Gross Domestic Product indicated that the financial services (finance and Insurance) continued to increase their contribution to the GDP over the quarters.

Speaking with The PUNCH, analysts identified technology adoption as one of the drivers of the growth in the sector.

The Managing Director/Chief Economist at ADSR, Dr Afolabi Olowookere, told The PUNCH, “The sector is growing, hence its contribution to the GDP will also grow. After COVID-19, the financial sector and ICT have been growing because people do a lot of transactions online.”

  • Four soldiers, nine others arrested for armed robbery in Rivers

Four soldiers, nine others arrested for armed robbery in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command said its men have arrested 13 persons, including four soldiers for alleged armed robbery, hijacking of food trucks and diverting them to other locations.

The police said among those also arrested in the criminal act was a member of the syndicate and operative of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps

The spokesperson for the command, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a statement in Port Harcourt on Monday.

Iringe-Koko said the feat followed a thorough investigation after the policemen made an initial arrest for suspected burglary in a private warehouse in Elimgbu community in Ohio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

She said two of the first set of operatives arrested abandoned their duty post in Delta and Kogi states respectively to engage in criminal activities in Rives State,  saying their confession led to the clampdown of other operatives and their civilian collaborators.

The state police image maker further disclosed that the four soldiers and the NSCDC operatives confessed to the crime.

The statement reads, “Investigations by the Rivers State Police Command, following arrests for attempted burglary, have revealed a wide range of criminal activities.

“On March 4, 2024, at approximately 11 pm, the Rivers State Police Command received a distress call about burglars who were attempting to vandalise warehouses in Elimgbu owned by Mr Emmanuel Nwangwu and Mrs Ndifreke Ekanem.

“The police promptly mobilised to the scene and arrested five suspects who had been severely beaten by a mob.

“The wounded suspects were taken to the police hospital as investigations began. During the investigation, it was discovered that one of the suspects, West Isaac (08NA/61/2653), was a corporal in the Nigerian Army serving in Delta State.

“Another suspect, Jabila Kammangar, also known as ‘Kaka,’ was an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps serving in Kabba, Kogi State. They confessed to abandoning their posts to engage in criminal activities in Rivers State due to its lucrativeness.

“Corporal West, a 36-year-old father of four from Buguma, Rivers State, joined the Army in 2008 and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion in Warri. He left his base on a sick pass and failed to return even after it expired, remaining absent for over a month until his arrest.”

The statement further noted that West disclosed to the police that he met Kaka while serving in the Army’s Anti-Bunkering Unit, and together, they engaged in several illegal activities.

“He further revealed that he came to Port Harcourt after receiving a call from Kaka about raiding warehouses, which led to their capture.

“Further investigations revealed that they were part of a larger criminal ring specialising in armed robbery, hijacking, and goods diversion.”

The statement added, “Corporal West disclosed to the police that he and other Army personnel had been key players in the group.

“Besides ransacking warehouses, they had a network of informants who provided information about the schedules of goods-bearing trailers.

“They would then dress in full military gear, lay in wait for the trailers, and accost them with a white Hilux van as they approached.

“They would intimidate the drivers, assault them, and hand their keys to designated drivers, who would then divert the trailers to waiting receivers.

“Based on his confessional statement, the police were able to track down and arrest Lance Corporal Abdul Musa (13NA/70/10545), Lance Corporal Mgbe Jeoffrey (16NA/75/6896), and Corporal Innocent Okwoli (12NA/68/6552), all personnel of the Nigerian Army.

“Additionally, eight civilian collaborators in the syndicate were arrested: Olisa Emeka, George Obilor, Sampson Wilson, Alfred Abeke, Barry John, Auwalu Aliyu, Uchenna Nwali, and Alhaji Sofinu Haruna.

Iringe-Koko said the gang’s key coordinator was Corporal Innocent Okwoli, a native of Otakpo in Benue State and a soldier stationed at Intels in Onne.

“Okwoli stated that he started leading hijacking operations after being introduced to the activity by an individual named Abbas and two unnamed naval officers.

“Following a successful operation, he formed his team,” she stated.

Continuing, she said, “Their numerous crimes include: “The hijacking of a trailer loaded with fertiliser valued at N25m, owned by Alhaji Sadiq Adams, occurred on February 17, 2024.

“On March 4, 2024, the group attempted to burgle warehouses owned by Emmanuel Nwagwu and Ndifreke Ekanem.

“In February 2024, a 40-foot container filled with imported clothing from China was hijacked and diverted.

“In February 2024, a trailer carrying POP cement was hijacked and diverted. The police have since recovered the stolen POP cement and are working to retrieve a trailer load of fertiliser from its receiver.”

It was revealed that an additional white Toyota Hilux used in the gang’s operations had been recovered from the NSCDC officer.

“Four of the affected soldiers have been dismissed by the Nigerian Army after being handed over by the police,” she said.

According to the statement, the state Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, expressed his profound appreciation for the swift and decisive cooperation of the military authorities.

Disu lauded their prompt actions in addressing the involved officers’ misconduct and subsequent handover to the police for prosecution.

He emphasised that this collaborative effort underscored a strong commitment to upholding justice and maintaining public trust in law enforcement institutions.

The CP praised the police officers involved in the arrest and urged them to remain vigilant.

  • Tinubu govt awards N6tn contracts for roads, others on First anniversary

Tinubu govt awards N6tn contracts for roads, others on First anniversary

President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Executive Council has awarded 51 contracts worth N6.27tn for procuring, constructing and developing various infrastructural projects across the federation in eight months.

The contracts, awarded between October 16, 2023, and May 14, 2024, totalling eight months, were allocated to facilitate the development of a wide array of infrastructural projects across critical sectors, encompassing the construction of roads, bridges, train systems, and airport infrastructure.

It awarded 43 road projects and three airport contracts, among others.

The FEC is the highest executive body in a Federal Government system. It’s composed of senior government officials including ministers and other high-ranking cabinet members and has a constitutional role to formulate policies, execute government projects, and, more broadly, aid the President in discharging his executive functions, although the president is the ultimate executive decision-maker.

The President, in his inaugural speech on May 29 last year, promised massive development of infrastructure.

He stated, “We shall continue the efforts of the Buhari administration on infrastructure. Progress toward national networks of roads, rail and ports shall get priority attention.“

At the FEC inaugural meeting last August, Tinubu charged his cabinet members to work hard and be committed to creating a buoyant economy that will serve every Nigerian.

Tinubu told FEC members including ministers to work hard, saying that the expectations of Nigerians were very high and underperformance would not be tolerated.

The President also restated his government‘s policy agenda which includes reforming the economy to deliver sustainable and inclusive growth and strengthen national security for peace and prosperity.

“You and I know that expectations are high, and these are tough times. We must work hard and move ourselves to create a buoyant economy that will serve Nigeria. We have an unacceptable employment rate, and we are facing threats from climate change.

“To turn things around, you have been selected to perform your utmost best. Our policy implementation will reform the economy, ensure inclusive growth, and strengthen security for peace and prosperity. Without security, there can be no investment,” the president said.

He also approved the conduct of the FEC weekly meeting to be held every Monday. Under the previous administration, the FEC meetings were held on Wednesdays every week.

    Abuja-Lokoja route

A breakdown of the projects showed that during the FEC meeting held on May 14, the Ministry of Works secured an approval of N89bn for the reconstruction of Koton- Karfe -Abaji road (Abuja 12 bound), along the Abuja-Lokoja route in Kogi state.

The FEC also on the same date awarded a contract worth N120bn for the equalisation of Lokoja- Benin road, Okpela Section, Lokoja-Benin’ dualised Auchi section. The road will be financed by BUA Cement under the tax credit scheme.

This decision was reached during a lengthy meeting chaired by Tinubu on May 14, during which 21 significant policy initiatives were unveiled.

Section two of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway was also awarded on the same day at a cost of N1.6tn while N546bn was apportioned for roads and bridges in Kaima- Tesse, Kwara State, Benin-Agbor, Benin Byepass and Ngaski-Wara in Kebbi State and N230bn Construction of a 37-kilometre Kano Bypass road.

On February 26, the Federal Government approved N1.067tn for the first phase of the highway’s construction. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, explained that the section, a 47.47 kilometres dual carriageway of five lanes on each side and a train track on the middle, is part of the 700-kilometre road spanning nine states and with two spurs leading up north.

The Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, designed to stretch 700 kilometres and pass through nine states, was awarded to Hitech Construction Company Limited on an Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Financing arrangement, where the bulk of the risk falls on the contractor.

On March 26, Umahi said FEC approved N1.495tn contracts for 29 roads and bridges across the country.

Umahi explained, “Today, the Federal Executive Council considered and approved 29 roads and bridges totalling N1.5tn. After going through the Bureau of Public Procurement, they were all approved by FEC, and we got Certification of No Objection.

    Benue projects

“Council also approved the Bukuru bridge across Katsina-Ala River in Benue State. It is a twin bridge matching the dualised road there, and each of the bridges is about 850 meters. Put together, it is 1.7km and costs about N83.799bn.

“FEC also approved a road from Shaki to Okerete in Oyo State. The road is 91.432km and will cost N144bn.”

Also in March, N992.23bn was awarded for the rehabilitation and construction of seven road projects.

The FEC also approved N5.5bn to fund the construction of access roads serving communities along the Abuja light rail project.

In the aviation sector, N4.2bn was awarded for the supply, installation and training of operators of disabled aircraft recovery systems at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos State.

On December 13, 2023, the FEC approved N6.33bn for technical support services at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and the procurement of a wide area Multilateration Air Traffic Management system at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said the technical support service, which involves maintenance of the new international wing of the Lagos Airport, would be carried out by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Ltd. for five years, costing N4.1bn.

The Multilateration air traffic management system to be sited at the Port Harcourt International Airport would cost N2.23bn.

“It is for the first five years for a contract sum of N4.1bn, inclusive of 7.5 per cent VAT, with a completion period of five years. It is for the comfort of the travelling public, for Nigerians,” he added.

Other projects are the building of bus terminals and other transport facilities in the FCT at the cost of N51bn, the upgrade of Kwaita-Yebu 5 Road in Kuala Area Council of Abuja, N7.6bn; and the building of the Court of Appeal Abuja Division at N37.2bn.

Speaking with our correspondent in Abuja, financial experts lauded the government’s strategic decision to prioritise infrastructural projects, recognising it as a proactive and forward-thinking initiative aimed at bolstering economic growth, enhancing connectivity, and fostering sustainable development across various sectors.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, Dr Muda Yusuf, said awarded projects were worthwhile and held significant value in fostering development.

He said, “The projects are worthwhile and hold significant value, each dedicated to fostering development. They are projects that support the development of our country and you can only have as many projects as you have resources. The government must allocate ample resources to bring them to fruition. It is the number of resources that you have that will determine the number of projects but as far as the value of those projects is concerned from a development point of view, all of them are very important and the government just have to ensure that they have enough resources to see them to completion.”

Similarly, a professor of Economics at Babcock University, Segun Ajibola, said the government had been creative in procuring contracts via private and public partnerships.

Ajibola said, “This administration has been very creative in terms of awarding contracts within these few months. There are so many projects that are so desirable but the funding capacity may be limited and there are so many ways and manners projects are awarded these days. For example, the Oshodi-Apapa expressway commissioned recently was done via a partnership with Dangote which will come back to the company by way of tax rebates. Also, some of the projects are on Public-private Partnerships and will not draw funds directly from the government.

“We have uncompleted projects dotting the landscape and others are begging for attention like road projects. We can only continue to encourage the government and pray for the country as a whole to up the ante by increasing the revenue being mobilised. The environment is a serious infrastructural deficit and begging for serious attention.”

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Cowry Treasurers Limited, Charles Sanni, emphasised the importance of maximising the benefits derived from these projects, stressing the necessity of prioritizing those with longer timelines for completion over those that can be immediately concluded, especially considering the existence of other unfinished projects awaiting attention.

Sanni said, “Again, there are political issues in economic policies, so if you ask on the streets in terms of economic optimisation, I would say they may not be necessary. Still, for the president, maybe it is a reward for political patronage but it is strictly economic and finance. It behoves the government to optimise the benefit of those projects. I don’t think that it is necessary to embark on those projects for which you have a longer time to complete when you can immediately conclude on some other unfinished projects.

“Our resources are scarce like we say in economics but what is the scale of preference? for a political objective, the scale of preference may be different from that who is inclined in that direction and I think we need to watch it.”

Naira strengthens to 1,339.33/$ at official market

The naira appreciated to 1,339.33/$ at the close of trading on the official window on Monday, gaining 9.68 per cent over Friday’s 1,482.81/$.

According to FMDQ data, which houses the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market, the daily turnover dropped to $180.80m from $556.25m on Friday, indicating a 67.50 per cent decline.

At the official market, the naira traded at an intraday high of N1,501 and an intraday low of N1,310 to the dollar on Monday.

At the black market, the naira traded at N1,520, indicating a 1.32 per cent depreciation from N1,500 exchanged on Friday.

The local currency on Friday closed flat against the dollar, ending the week marginally strong at the official foreign exchange market after weeks of weakening, a situation that the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, termed seasonal fluctuation.

He said this at the post-Monetary Policy Committee meeting press briefing last Tuesday in Abuja.

“Members further observed the recent volatility in the foreign exchange market, attributing this to seasonal demand, a reflection of the interplay between demand and supply freely functioning market system,” Cardoso said.

Meanwhile, the demand for foreign exchange by individuals and companies seeking to do importation and other forex-related activities fell 42 per cent year-on-year, the latest data from the CBN has shown.

An analysis of the total sectoral utilisation of foreign exchange revealed that 19 sectors and services received $21.12bn forex allocation in 2023.
