Tanzanian woman risks death sentence over viral TikTok dance using president’s voice

Tanzanian social-media influencer, Jennifer Jovin, popularly known as Niffer, has been charged with treason, a capital offence, after posting a short dance clip using a viral song allegedly mocking President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The clip, which circulated widely on social media, featured Niffer dancing to a satirical track titled “Raïs Samia – MAANDAMANO YA Nywi‑nywi‑nywi”.

Tanzanian authorities claim the video amounted to incitement and public disorder, prompting legal action.

The 26-year-old lady appeared in Dar es Salaam’s Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court alongside 21 co-accused.

The prosecution charged them with three counts of treason; conspiracy to commit treason, acts intended to disrupt public order, and incitement through social media.

Under Tanzanian law, treason is a serious offence punishable by life imprisonment or, in extreme cases, the death penalty.

Niffer’s mother, Mwanaisha Isaac, publicly appealed to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for leniency, describing her daughter as the family’s breadwinner and a young woman who loves her country.

Her emotional plea has resonated with many Tanzanians, who have taken to social media to voice support and request compassion in handling the matter.
