  • Yahaya Bello seeks medical trip abroad amid ₩80.2bn fraud case

Yahaya Bello seeks medical trip abroad amid ₩80.2bn fraud case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opposed an application by former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, seeking to travel abroad for medical treatment.

The matter came up on Thursday, June 27, 2025, before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja during Bello’s ongoing trial over an alleged ₩80.2 billion money laundering case.

Bello’s lawyer, J.B. Daudu, SAN, urged the court to consider his client’s health, noting that he had not left Nigeria in over eight years and now requires urgent medical attention.

He said the request was backed by a medical report and a letter from a consultant cardiologist. He also asked for the release of Bello’s passport, which was submitted as part of his bail conditions.

Daudu argued that the defendant has no criminal history abroad and promised he would return before the end of August. “My lord can even specify a return date,” he told the court.

EFCC’s lead counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, opposed the request, describing it as an abuse of court process. He noted that similar applications had been filed in other courts and accused Bello of forum shopping.

Pinheiro said the application was technically defective because the sureties were not informed or included, raising concerns about their responsibility if Bello fails to return.

He also described the health concerns as minor and treatable in Nigeria. “He says he has low potassium; bananas and pawpaw will handle that,” he said.

The prosecution added that Bello is under international watch and risks arrest if he leaves the country. “He could be ‘Hushpuppied’ from Dubai,” Pinheiro warned.

Daudu responded that the red notice had lapsed after Bello’s arraignment and insisted the court should use its discretion to allow the trip.

During the session, cross-examination of EFCC’s fourth witness, Aryan Mashelia Bata of Zenith Bank, continued. The witness clarified he was not harassed by Bello’s aides but had only struggled to find a seat in court.

Justice Nwite adjourned the trial to July 3 and 4, and set July 21, 2025, for ruling on the travel application.

  • APC: “Tinubu won’t be defeated like Jonathan in 2027 over insecurity”

APC: “Tinubu won’t be defeated like Jonathan in 2027 over insecurity”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asserted that President Bola Tinubu will not allow himself to be defeated in the 2027 general elections due to rising insecurity in the country, as former President Goodluck Jonathan was in 2015.

The ruling party made the statement in light of growing concerns over the recent increase in violent attacks in the country, with many speculating that insecurity could influence the outcome of the next election.

APC emphasized that while insecurity contributed to Jonathan’s defeat in 2015, it is determined to prevent similar circumstances from affecting President Tinubu’s administration.

In an interview with THISDAY, APC spokesperson Mr. Bala Ibrahim responded to claims that the rising insecurity in the country is politically motivated, designed to destabilize the government and ensure the president’s defeat in 2027.

“If  indeed this is the observation or the thinking of the naysayers, the government cannot just fold its arms and allow itself to be caught napping,” he said.

“It is good that people are linking history to the political situation of the country. If that was what was responsible for the downfall of Jonathan, I can tell you, Jonathan was defeated by the APC, and the APC cannot blindfold itself and allow itself to defeat itself.

“So, President Bola Tinubu by your submission or by the submission of the naysayers is already aware of the problem that will take him to lose and he will not allow it.

“And that is why he has a capable hand in terms of National Security Adviser, MallamNuhu Ribadu, one who, as I talk to you now, is criss-crossing these hotspots with a view to reinvigorating the system, that is, fighting this insurgency and boosting the morale of those who are carrying out the fight.”
The APC spokesperson also pointed to recent steps taken by the president, such as directing the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to relocate to the epicenter of banditry in the North-West, resulting in victory for military in the region.
“In a nutshell, the president will not allow himself to be defeated by himself. He’s taking measures to ensure that results are obtained for whatever strategy that was put in place to fight this insecurity and he’s assuring Nigerians that the safety of Nigeria is on the front banner of this programme.

“And this insecurity is increasingly invigorated in a way and manner that is making movement in the areas that were hitherto impenetrable, so much so that people can now ply the roads from Abuja to Sokoto. They can ply the roads from Abuja to Maiduguri, and they can move about in areas that were no good areas before.

“Yes, there are spots where the heat is still on, but it’s only a sign that Uhuru is very close by. When you’re about to get to waterloo, you will see that the intensity of it becomes higher, and there are chances for more casualty to be found. Definitely it is not to say the war is about to be lost. We are actually going for victory,” he said.

In response to the rising insecurity, the APC attributed part of the problem to Nigeria’s strained relations with its francophone neighbors, particularly following recent political changes in Niger.

This, according to Ibrahim, has led to a lack of collaboration with neighboring countries in the fight against insurgents and bandits.

“Nigeria cannot operate in isolation and when you look at the relationship between Nigeria and its francophone neighbouring countries, you will see that of recent, ever since the change of government in Niger, there has been a kind of sour relationship that  is threatening the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF).

“Nigeria is literally left alone to fight this war without the collaborative effort of its neighbours. If the President of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu, has not been doing enough, probably they would have overrun Nigeria by now.

“But thanks to the initiative of the National Security Advisor (NSA), Mallam NuhuRibadu, who has been strategising and re-strategising.  You see there is a decline in the ferocity of attacks.

“When last did you hear these bandits or kidnappers or insurgents coming to attack with such spectacular manners as they used to do. Even in areas like Zamfara, Kebbiand Sokoto, you found that the degree of attacks have reduced. Which is to say that these people who are attacking are increasing in being put under heat.

“And I assure you, the situation is going to continue improving with the initiatives of the government of the day.”

Meanwhile, the security situation in Nigeria has led to widespread concern, with groups like Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-political organization, urging the federal government to collaborate with state governors and develop new strategies to combat the growing insecurity challenges.

Senators from the 19 northern states have also condemned the rising attacks in communities, particularly in Plateau and Benue States, vowing to resist any attempts to normalize such violent activities.

In response to the growing insecurity, former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mike Ejiofor, blamed the persistent violence on a combination of intelligence failures, inadequate manpower, and the limited use of modern defense technologies.

  • Adams out for rest of season

Adams out for rest of season

Popular Sevilla striker Akor Adams will miss the rest of the 2024/25 campaign after suffering a serious thigh injury during the recent 2-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid on Sunday, the club have confirmed.

The 25-year-old Nigerian forward, who joined from Montpellier in January for €5.5m, has been sidelined with a rectus femoris muscle injury in his right thigh.

Sevilla confirmed he faces a minimum of two months out, effectively ending his season.

“Adams will begin his recovery process this Wednesday (today),” Sevilla’s medical team confirmed in a statement.

Adams had been brought in during the winter transfer window to help address Sevilla’s attacking struggles as the team battle relegation. However, his time in Spain has been plagued by setbacks.

After making his debut on February 1 in a goalless draw against Getafe, Adams picked up an injury just days later that kept him out for over five weeks.

Since returning, he has featured only three times — against Athletic Bilbao, Real Betis, and AtlĂ©tico Madrid — and is yet to open his account for the club.

Adams, who made 47 Ligue 1 appearances for Montpellier, scoring 11 goals and providing two assists, had been expected to make an immediate impact in Spain.

So far, the former Flying Eagles attacker has played just four La Liga matches for Sevilla — starting once and coming off the bench three times. His most recent appearance was the full 90 minutes against AtlĂ©tico Madrid on April 6.

Adams’ injury compounds Sevilla’s ongoing injury crisis, with fellow winter signing RubĂ©n Vargas also ruled out for the remainder of the season. Vargas was also taken off in the early stages of their clash against Atletico.

Despite the setbacks, Sevilla remain eight points clear of the drop zone thanks in part to favourable results elsewhere, including a draw between Leganés and Osasuna.

  • FG to automate landing, exit cards for foreigners from May 1

FG to automate landing, exit cards for foreigners from May 1

The Federal Government FG has announced that, effective May 1, 2025, all landing and exit cards for foreigners entering or leaving Nigeria will be automated, as part of efforts to enhance border security and streamline immigration processes.

With the automation, foreigners will be required to complete the forms online before boarding flights to or from Nigeria.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Wednesday, during a joint briefing with the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, in Abuja.

Tunji-Ojo clarified that the new system is free of charge and aimed solely at improving national security and data management.

He said, “We’ve always had the exit and landing cards, but in a manual format—you had to fill out a paper form. But Nigeria is a country of 230 million brilliant people, and we must lead the pack when it comes to technology. In view of that, we are automating the process, and everything will take effect from May 1, 2025.

“So, the landing and exit cards will be filled online before boarding and must be presented to airlines before you can be allowed on board. The responsibility for coordinating and issuing regulations to airlines lies with the NCAA, and we’ve agreed today that the NCAA will handle that, as they are as committed as we are to protecting our country, securing our borders, and upholding our national sovereignty.

“In addition, we’ll be introducing other measures which we’ll explain more explicitly later. We’ve also agreed that the e-visa will make it easier for people to come into Nigeria while enhancing national security. Applications will be processed online.

“There is already a centralised visa approval centre at the immigration headquarters. Officers have been trained, equipped, and the system is integrated with major global criminal databases, including Interpol. This will allow for better background checks for those entering Nigeria. The landing and exit cards are free. No one is paying for them. It’s purely for security and record-keeping purposes.”

He said that to ensure a smooth rollout, both ministries have agreed to form a joint team comprising officials from the NCAA and the Nigeria Immigration Service.

The minister added that the team is expected to finalize regulatory protocols and implementation frameworks within one week.

He said, “We’ve decided today to work together to protect one interest—the Nigerian interest. The NCAA and NIS will each nominate members to a joint implementation team that will handle the frameworks, regulations, and protocols. This should be completed within a week, hopefully sooner, so that the regulations can be issued to the airlines.”

Tunji-Ojo also announced a three-month amnesty period before full enforcement begins on May 1.

“The programme starts on May 1, 2025. We’ve also decided on a three-month amnesty period before full enforcement. Implementation begins May 1, but the amnesty allows foreigners who have overstayed their visas or breached immigration laws to come forward and regularize their status at immigration offices.”

The minister recalled that collaboration between the two ministries had earlier led to the deployment of the Advanced Passenger Information System, which has significantly improved border surveillance.

According to him, several individuals on Interpol’s red notice list have recently been apprehended upon entry into Nigeria through the system.

“These are people who, before this administration, would have found their way into Nigeria unnoticed. But thanks to our collaboration, they’ve been arrested and handed over to Interpol,” he said.

Also speaking, Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, explained how the automated system would function in practice.

He said that upon arrival in Nigeria, a foreigner’s entry card—completed online—would be verified using their passport number. The same applies to the exit card upon departure.

“If you’re a foreigner and you walk up to a boarding desk, airline staff will ask for your exit card. If you’ve overstayed, the system will flag it, and the airline will refer you to immigration officers,” Keyamo explained.

He noted that consequences for violations could include fines, visa cancellation, or being blacklisted from entering Nigeria for up to 10 years.

FG: Naira-for-crude policy here to stay

The Federal Government fg has doubled down on its Naira-for-crude oil initiative, declaring it a permanent fixture in Nigeria’s long-term economic reform strategy — not a temporary fix.

In a statement posted Wednesday via the Federal Ministry of Finance’s official channels, the government emphasized that all domestic crude oil and refined petroleum sales will continue to be conducted in Naira, in a bid to strengthen the local currency and reduce pressure on foreign exchange.

“This initiative is not a stopgap solution,” the ministry said, describing it as a strategic national directive aimed at improving local refining capacity, bolstering energy security, and fostering economic sovereignty.
