    Nigeria’s FX reserves hit $34.7bn

Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves have reached a high of $34.7bn, according to data obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s website by PUNCH Online on Sunday.

This represents an increase of $110m from the previous day’s figure of $34.5bn.

The reserves have been steadily increasing over the past week, with a total gain of $316m since July 1..

This growth has been attributed to several factors, including the recent increase in oil prices, improved diaspora remittances, and the Central Bank’s efforts to stabilise the currency.

Experts believe that the increase in foreign exchange reserves is a positive development for Nigeria’s economy, as it provides a cushion against external shocks and supports the country’s ability to meet its financial obligations.

A recent Fitch Ratings has placed Nigeria’s economic outlook to positive, citing significant reforms that have restored macroeconomic stability and enhanced policy coherence and credibility.

Fitch said, “The positive outlook partly reflects reforms over the last year, which have reduced distortions stemming from previous unconventional monetary and exchange rate policies.”

The Central Bank has implemented various measures to manage the foreign exchange market, including the introduction of the Investors’ and Exporters’ window, which has helped to attract foreign investment and boost reserves.

The reforms have led to a return of sizeable inflows to the official foreign exchange market and a significant rise in foreign portfolio investment inflows.

However, Fitch noted that short-term challenges remain, including high inflation and FX market volatility. Despite this, the agency expects further monetary policy tightening and strengthening of monetary policy transmission.

“The reforms have contributed to the restoration of macroeconomic stability and enhanced policy coherence and credibility.

“However, we see significant short-term challenges, notably high inflation, and the FX market has yet to stabilize, and the durability of the commitment to reform is to be tested,” Fitch stated.

  • Kanayo O Kanayo — Most artists on drugs, need to be rescued

Kanayo O Kanayo — Most artists on drugs, need to be rescued

Veteran actor, filmmaker and politician, Kanayo O Kanayo, was recently a guest on the Honest Brunch podcast, where he spoke about his career, movie industry and other issues. FAITH AJAYI brings excerpts

I was scrolling through Instagram this morning and I saw a video of you, where you seemed so angry. What prompted you to make that video?

It borders on professional misconduct. This is the only industry that has kept me and a whole lot of others for the past 30 to 40 years, so we need to protect it. I was calling out a particular woman, Mrs Unigwe, who is the mother of a young actress, Angel Unigwe. I felt very unhappy about the young girl whose mother I feel is messing up her career. It borders on a breach of contract. Imagining hiring an artist to make content for YouTube, and they can only give you three days. Meanwhile, we usually shoot for four days, and sometimes five. But, since the artist gave only three days, they should not allow the three days to expire. A day ends by 12am, but imagine her taking away her daughter at 9pm, without shooting six scenes.

There was nothing we didn’t do and people who didn’t intervene for the woman to bring her daughter, so that the shoot can be concluded. But, she didn’t listen. Then, when I went out and was talking to people, I heard reports that they also had similar experiences with her. It was alleged that after she collects money for a production, she would start changing the terms of the contract. That was why I called her out.

As a longstanding member of the entertainment industry, it behoves me to protect those who cannot speak, those who don’t know when their rights are breached or violated. I stand in that gap. She has done this to a lot of people and many of them called me yesterday.  There was nothing we didn’t beg this woman with, but she wouldn’t listen to anybody. Unfortunately (for her), she didn’t know we had all the evidence of our transaction. Even the people she was talking to pleaded with her on our behalf, so she could come and finish the shoot. Eventually, she refused to bring her daughter.

Are issues like this not supposed to be handled by the associations in the industry?

That’s where the problem is. Most actors think they are bigger than the Actors Guild of Nigeria. They never attend meetings. As a matter of fact, some of them would tell you that they don’t belong to AGN; that they are doing their thing. But, do you know where you catch them? When they go to embassies to get visas, they ask them which group they belong to in the industry. It is then they would start pleading with the AGN president to write them a letter. Meanwhile, they never contribute. So, when it comes to associations, there are some people that, once they attain stardom, they start behaving like they’re bigger than the guild.

Is that not a problem created by older practitioners in the industry, because for example, if people look up to somebody who has spent quite a number of years in the industry and the person is not a member of any association, or has disregard for the associations. Don’t you think that would make younger artists who attain stardom say, ‘I have no business with this association’?

Exactly! That’s why there needs to be a clarion call for everybody to know that we are better off being under a guild or association that will protect our general interests, because operating individually does not help us. People need to have that understanding. But, when people don’t feel that, it is bad.

But, it’s a work in progress to call on the actors and the AGN president with his executives to keep on working to bring actors together. Actors should also know that it is not just when we go for funerals that we should work together. Team work makes the dream work. If we work as a team, we will have more respect.

It is so bad that when a fund is set up in a way that a percentage of what actors earn is deposited in that fund, so that in the case of a health issue, money can be taken from there.  It is because of things like that you see actors always coming to social media to ask for money, because many people have refused to be part of the association. If I earn N1m per movie for instance, what is one per cent of it that I cannot set aside for my future? I wonder why people wouldn’t contribute N10,000 to a fund that will be used to take care of them if they are sick? A rainy day will always come when you cannot function effectively, and your health deteriorates. That’s the idea behind the social security system in some other climes, so that when you are not working and you’re not in good health, they would take money from there and take care of you. But, people don’t want to align or contribute to this. As far as I’m concerned, that is very bad.

How have you managed to be relevant over the years? For many entertainers, there shelf lives do not exceed 10 or 15 years; but you’ve been consistently relevant in the industry for decades. How have you done it?

On a lighter note, I have never gone anywhere in the dead of night to be more successful or relevant than anybody else. Perhaps, there is an unseen finger or hand that has said I should continue doing what I’m doing. I am not the best actor, even though I won the Best Actor category of the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2006. I have not done anything special, but I am a professional to the core. I try to do things the right way. I have tried as much as I can on my own, because if you play your part, God will also play His part.

Also, I have tried as much as I can to take care of my health, and I’ve tried to obey the laws of nature.

Unfortunately, there is no insurance in the industry, from which we can draw from a pool of funds. It is like you only earn when you’re working. There are no royalties, so it means that when you’re not working, you’re not earning. You need to be very discerning with your health, so in terms of remaining relevant, I haven’t done anything special, but I’ve tried as much as possible to align with professional conducts. I just do my job and leave the rest for God. When the younger ones come, I bring my wisdom to the table, and they bring their strength. We then join them together.

Are you aware that most artists are on drugs? These are things I have spoken with the AGN president about, and he said we should treat them in-house first. There are many people we need to rescue. Most times, when they come to a location, they stay in their cars for the next two hours.  If it is a lady, don’t forget she needs the next one or two hours to apply make-up, so you end up having some people coming at 8 for a production, and shoot not starting till about 11 or 12. It is a bad situation, and I don’t reserve my comments on things that will take the industry forward. They should remove their hands from all these things (illicit substances) they take.

For some actors, when they have reached a certain point in their careers with a lot of fans who like to watch them, they drastically raise their pay and make it so high that producers would go through a lot of stress to get them. Is there nothing that can be done to control or regulate what people charge in the industry?

No, you don’t regulate. It is an open market economy, so you don’t regulate what people charge. If you can’t afford one, go for the one you can afford. It helps to build new artists. There are some people in the industry now that if you want to shoot with them, they would say they can only grant you one day (to shoot), and would charge about N1m to N1.5m. For someone of them, if you contact them June, they would tell you they don’t have any available date until the next February. So, that gives one the option to start discovering new talents.

On this note, I also want to say to those in the entertainment industry that we should start discovering those who would act as back-up (to established stars). That a person’s face ‘sells’ a movie on YouTube does not mean it will ‘sell’ on Showmax, Amazon Prime, or Netflix. It is not good for the industry, but it is also an opportunity to start discovering those who are not under the wings of those guys (established acts). To sum it up, regulation of price doesn’t happen anywhere in the world.

  • Nigeria eyes $172bn investment in mining, agriculture, others

Nigeria eyes $172bn investment in mining, agriculture, others

A multi-national company, Nigeria Backbone Infrastructure Limited, has announced its intention to invest $172bn to develop various infrastructure sectors in the country.

This investment, utilising alternative financing options, will be allocated to mineral resources, energy, agriculture, housing, and transportation sectors for the next 22 years, a statement by the company said on Saturday.

The administration of President Bola Tinubu has openly reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing foreign direct investment inflows into the country, while also promoting alternative financing for the construction of essential infrastructure projects.

Last year, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Doris Aniete, said the government has secured $30bn in commitments from foreign investors.

Despite this amount, Nigeria still requires investments to reduce its infrastructural gap which requires $3 trillion over a period of 30 years according to the implementation of the National Integrated Master Plan.

The Group Chief Executive Officer, Henry Owonka, said the company with foreign partners is seeking approval for a joint venture model to facilitate its planned investment in the country.

Owonka emphasised that the company intends to align with the current administration’s infrastructure plan, highlighting that a consistent influx of investment, as proposed by the company, is preferable to isolated investments by other investors especially in the mining sector.

He said, “What we are looking for is for us to structure our program of investment, we are not looking for a sovereign guarantee which will deplete the foreign reserves but innovative ways to collateralize those natural resources that the country has in abundance. The president has verbally approved our request.

in the range of commodities. We are seeking approval for a joint venture model because in that way we can draw more investors not only in the country but also outside the country. Because when you have a joint venture with the government, it’s better and that’s what we are seeking rather than for them to just issue land to us.”

The CEO stating plans for the mining sector noted that the company is ready to invest $4bn, “to explore mineral resources but we need data and that is also one of the offers we proposed so that we can bring in our expertise and help the government obtain accurate data and then we can explore those minerals. This partnership will help the government plan to reduce dependence on crude oil. We also doing this across all the ministries because it’s a $172bn investment drive.”

In a presentation at the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, the Chief Operations Officer, Clement Kwegyir-Afful, explained that the investment drive is to reduce the huge infrastructural gap in the country.

“The current administration is looking for several investments to come in through the private sector to reduce the infrastructure gap. The NBIL have come together as a team to support the government achieve this mandate without any sovereign guarantee.

“We want to help address the energy gap through the use of renewables, so one of our subsidiaries focuses on renewable and how we can address that. We are going to bring in innovative ways of funding through financier engineering to raise funds that would address the infrastructure gap.”

Continuing, the statement read, “Minerals exploration is one area the government want to use to create another source of revenue shifting from oil and that is one strong area that we want to focus on. It will raise a different form of revenue.

“To do this will require a significant amount of money, so over the next 22 to 23 years, we are looking to invest $172bn dollars. If you break this down yearly, that works to $6bn every year in investment out of the numerous numbers the president is looking for.

“We have grouped our project into phases; the first one will be the ones that have the most impact on Nigeria’s landscape, so we are looking at hospitals, renewable energies, mineral exploration and exportation because that is where we have huge concerns and also some of the deep sea ports,” he added.

  • Adeboye — No amount of anointing can fight sexual temptation

Adeboye — No amount of anointing can fight sexual temptation

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said he is still wary of sexual immorality despite his ‘anointing’ and years in the ministry.

Adeboye said despite his age, he runs faster than before to avoid any form of sexual temptation, noting that no amount of anointing can fight such temptation.

The cleric also warned ministers of the gospel to be wary of sexual immorality and the erroneous belief that their ‘anointing’ could help them withstand any temptation.

He stated these during a sermon at the just concluded Ministers & Workers Conference of RCCG America 1, which consists of North, Central & Caribbean with the theme: “The Glory Ahead”.

During the sermon shared on his YouTube page on Friday, Adeboye noted that Samson, who was a judge in Israel, fell into sexual immorality despite the anointing over him.

He said, “Somebody says, at your age, why are you still running? I run faster than before because the closer you get to the finishing point, the more careful you must be.

“Some of you can say, ‘Daddy, what are you saying, are you still running?’ I run fast.

“‘With all your anointing?’ Does anointing turn your body to stone? Samson was anointed. Single-handedly, he killed a thousand soldiers. A woman finished him. I hope the boys are listening.

“You can say, ‘Is anybody still interested in an 82-year-old man?’ She is not interested in you but interested in putting an end to all the great works God has done through you.

“You see that woman smiling at you everywhere you go, she is there smiling, and she is not your wife, run.”

Adeboye also counselled youths to be careful of lust, urging them to run away from anything that looks like sin.

He added, “And you girls, when you see a boy smiling at you saying, ‘Where have you been all my life? It looks as if the sun has just come out.’

“He is calling you sunshine. By the time he finishes with you, you won’t even know the difference between sunshine and sunset. You may laugh but mark my words.

“I do warn my children, particularly the boys. I said if the devil comes against you, tell the devil to get lost, but when you see a girl smiling at you in a funny way, run because you can’t win the battle.

“Didn’t you read a report that a man committed an offence about 42 years ago, and now his ministry is finished? Anybody who tells you that whatever you do is hidden, it’s hidden until the wind begins to blow.

“The Bible says, flee youthful lust. It did not ask you to say grace would be sufficient. There is no grace for what God says you should run from. Maybe grace to run.”

  • Dele-Bashiru — Eagles can get World Cup qualification back on track

Dele-Bashiru — Eagles can get World Cup qualification back on track

Hatayaspor midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru was impressive in his competitive debut for the Super Eagles last month, scoring the equalizer against South Africa in Uyo.

The 23-year-old talks about why he chose England ahead of England, the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and his time at Manchester City, in this interview with ’TANA AIYEJINA

You were eligible to represent England and Nigeria but chose the latter. What informed your decision?

I was born in Nigeria. I left Nigeria when I was two years old, so, I really don’t remember much about Nigeria. The decision to play for Nigeria is because it’s the country of my parents, and playing for Nigeria will make them proud. I have a lot of family here in Nigeria, so I just want to make everyone proud and that gives me motivation as well.

You scored your first goal against South Africa in a 2026 World Cup qualifier in Uyo. What was the feeling of scoring in your second game for the country?

It was a proud moment for me. Of course, I have been slowly introduced into the team and I have had to be patient and I am just happy that it paid off; I mean, the coach’s trust in me paid off. I am happy I made my family proud and a lot of Nigerians also.

How did you feel after the 1-1 draw against Bafana, which worsened the Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the World Cup?

Of course, I was disappointed with the result, the goal is to win as many games as possible, and with the squad we have, I think we have the quality to beat any team in Africa. We are disappointed that we didn’t get the three points.

You were fouled in the box in that game, which sparked calls for a penalty by the home fans. Do you feel that was a penalty?

In the moment, I felt it was a penalty, it was a very hard tackle and I still have marks on my leg from the tackle. In games like that, I feel there should be VAR and that should help the referees make the right decisions.

Some fans believe that your injury and absence is why our midfield couldn’t hold the forte in Abidjan, where the team were stunned 2-1 by Benin Republic. How did you feel about coming off injured against South Africa?

The injury was not too bad and before the game against Benin, I spoke to the coach that I’m not 100 per cent and can manage it, but I felt everyone needed to be firing on all cylinders. So, I didn’t want to let the team down, but overall, it is not a bad injury. Within a week, I had recovered.

In Abidjan, what do you think went wrong against Benin?

We started the game strongly and were 1-0 up, but from that point on, I think the team just lost concentration or we became overly confident that we were going to win the match, and that’s how we conceded the first goal. After that, the game opened up a little bit and again, we lost concentration from the setpiece and once a team losing goes 2-1 up, it will be difficult to score them.

Do you think we can get our World Cup qualification back on track?

Of course, I think next year we will have a whole year to work together, and we have some friendly games as well. And when we have the full team back, I am confident we will get on track.

The Super Eagles No.10 jersey has been worn by the likes of Austin Okocha, Mikel Obi and some of Nigeria’s biggest players. What does it feel like putting on that jersey?

Before going into a game, when you are wearing the No.10 jersey for Nigeria, it’s a fantastic moment. It’s a moment when you feel pressure, but not negative pressure, it is positive pressure knowing that you have to perform, and I think I perform better in situations where the stakes are high. I am happy I was given the No.10 and for the future, whatever number or role I am given, I will always be happy to play.

What is your message to the agitated fans after the disappointing World Cup qualifying results?

I will tell them just to keep calm, to trust in the team, and trust in the manager, and next year, I am sure we will win the games and qualify for the World Cup.

How did you feel when you received your first Super Eagles call-up?

Of course, I was happy I was over the moon. My parents were happy, and everyone else.

Was it easy blending with the other players in the team, knowing that you were coming from a different background from some of them?

It was quite easy. I can understand Yoruba and pidgin English very well also, I had a few friends in the team, and they helped me settle in smoothly.

On your debut, you had an assist against Mozambique in a friendly in Portugal last year. How did you feel helping the team to win?

First of all, I was happy with my performance. Before the game, I felt a little bit of pressure being an international match and not a club affair, so it was a different type of pressure again. So, getting the assist was very pleasing and also for the team to get the victory.

Few months later, you missed out on the AFCON. Were you disappointed?

Of course, you are going to be disappointed but at the end of the day, we are all a team. I was watching as a fan. I was supporting them throughout each match and I was hoping they would get the victory (in the final) but I guess second place is good still.

How did you take the final defeat to hosts Ivory Coast?

I was disappointed. I think Ivory Coast, I don’t want to say they got lucky in the tournament but sometimes people have luck and they ended up winning the tournament. However, I was happy with the team’s (Eagles) performances throughout the tournament.

Your brother Tom has also played for the Flying Eagles. How does it feel to come from like a family of footballers?

In a perfect world, I would like me and my brother to both be in the national team at the same time but I have no doubt that in the future, he will make it to the Super Eagles. Growing up, playing football together, we were bought by Manchester City together and he’s the one person that motivated me the most growing up. I’m happy we are both still playing football.

How has being a product of the Manchester City Academy impacted your career since you left the Etihad?

I will say initially, when I left for Sheffield Wednesday, it was difficult to adapt to a completely different environment. At Manchester City, you have everything, all the facilities, the infrastructure, you have over 20 pitches, a massive gym, the correct food, you travel and everything is on point. But I think overall, the foundation I have from Manchester City has given me the confidence wherever I go, from Sheffield Wednesday and now at Hatayaspor. I always have that self-confidence.

Are you considering playing in the Premier League someday?

Hopefully, if it is possible. Now I think my next step is to try and get into the top five or six leagues in Europe.

How much of Nigeria do you know in terms of the culture?

I think I know enough. I love the food, whether it’s garri, jollof rice, fried rice, eba, iyan and the music, I love Burna Boy, Asake, Ruger, Omah Lay and co.

10 states battling flooding, 21 others at risk, FG warns

The Federal Government FG, on Thursday, said no fewer than 10 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, had either experienced various degrees of flooding or recorded casualties as rains intensified.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof Joseph Utsev, who dropped the red alert during a press briefing in Abuja, warned that 21 more states might suffer flooding.

He stated this against the background of the Wednesday downpour which grounded business and commercial activities in Lagos and Ogun states.

The resulting flooding brought down a two-storey building in the Mushin area of Lagos and overwhelmed residents while pupils could not attend schools in parts of the state.

Also, a pupil was swept away by the flooding in the Ketu area of Lagos.

Utsev explained that the Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency released in April had predicted that 148 local government areas in 31 states fell within the high flood risk areas.

The affected states include Adamawa, Akwa  Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Kebbi.

Others are Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba and Yobe.

    Cholera may spread

The minister warned that cholera might spread further in Nigeria due to the flooding.

He further stated that river flooding would begin this month, and would hit Ondo, Kaduna, Anambra, Benue, Adamawa and 12 other states.

According to him, out of the 31 states where the Annual Flood Outlook predicted would experience flooding, the incident had occurred in 10.

Providing a national update on flooding, Utsev said, “It should be noted that some states have started experiencing varying levels of flooding and its associated disasters as early as April this year.

“So far, more than 10 states of the federation and the FCT have experienced one degree of flooding or the other with several casualties recorded including displacement of people and loss of property.

“For example, the torrential downpour in the early hours of June 24, 2024, in the FCT resulted in flooding of Trade More Estate in Lugbe where two deaths were reported and several houses submerged.’’

He stated, “AMAC (Abuja Municipal Council), Kuje, Gwagwalada, Bwari, and Kwali LGAs (local government areas) have also been flooded. Other affected states and LGAs are Anambra (Onitsha North); Edo (Benin); Benue (Makurdi); Kwara (Oke-Ero, Moro); Lagos (Agege, Alimosho, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Ikeja, Eti-Osa); Ogun (Ijebu-Ode); Osun (Oriade); Nasarawa (Doma); Taraba (Takum, Sarduna); and Yobe.

“It is important to note that as rainfall increases both in frequency and intensity, particularly in the southern part of the country, this will increase the level of flooding and may worsen the ravaging cholera outbreak.”

According to the National Centre for Disease Control, the cholera outbreak has resulted in 63 deaths and 2,102 suspected cases as of June 30, 2024.

The water resources minister stated that most of the flood incidents recorded so far were flash/urban floods resulting from high rainfall intensities of long duration and poor and blocked drainage systems in the urban areas and their metropolises.

    Kainji  dam

“As of today, both Kainji and Jebba Dams on River Niger are still impounding water into their reservoirs. Shiroro Dam on the River Kaduna is equally impounding water. There is no release of water yet from any of the dams within and outside Nigeria.

“At this point, it is important to state that river flooding is expected, beginning this month (July 2024). The states that are likely to be impacted by this as predicted are Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Adamawa, Benue, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Jigawa, Kogi, Kebbi, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Ondo, Ogun, Rivers, Taraba and the FCT,” Utsev stated.

The minister recalled that in April 2024, he presented to the general public the 2024 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, an agency under his supervision.

The agency has the responsibility for the provision of information on flood forecasts and alerts and monitoring of all the major rivers in Nigeria, including the trans-boundary Rivers Niger and Benue.

“The AFO shows that 148 LGA in 31 states fall within the High Flood Risk areas, while 249 LGA fall within the Moderate Flood Risk areas with the remaining 377 LGA falling within the Low Flood Risk areas.

“The high flood risk states as predicted are Adamawa, Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross-River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara and the FCT,” Utsev stated.

The minister pointed out that Nigeria is located within the River Niger Basin which is occupied by eight other countries including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Chad, Cote D’ Ivoire, Guinea, Mali and Niger.

“The country is at the lowest portion of the basin. This means that once the upper catchment of the basin gets flooded, Nigeria should be prepared to experience flooding incidents. It is important to note that the month of June 2024 signifies the beginning of hydrological year 2024/2025 in the Niger Basin.

“The flow situation within the catchment is currently within normal as the rising water levels at our various monitoring stations in Niamey are still within acceptable levels.

“The flow situation at Jiderebode in Kebbi State upstream of Kainji and Jebba reservoirs which is the first monitoring station on the River Niger in Nigeria is still at the normal situation.  The same applies to the flow at Lokoja, Kogi State (the confluence of Rivers Niger and Benue).

“We are also monitoring the development on the River Benue Sub-Basin. Here, Wuroboki in Adamawa State is our first monitoring station where the flow from the upstream Cameroun is received. The flow situation at Wuroboki is relatively normal at this time, so there is no cause for alarm in terms of water releases in the Benue River basin.

“The Lagdo Dam operators have informed us that they are currently filling the dam for hydropower generation. However, we will keep monitoring the development on this flank and put close tabs on other monitoring stations as we are approaching the critical months,” he stated.

The Director-General of NIHSA, Clement Nze, underscored the Federal Government’s advisory role, noting that enforcement and local action fell under the states’ jurisdiction.

He said the central government would continue its efforts to construct buffer dams alongside the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, to mitigate flood risks.

Meanwhile, residents of Lagos and Ogun communities are still counting their losses from the Wednesday flooding triggered by the 12-hour rainfall.

A pupil, identified simply as Joshua, reportedly drowned in the Ketu area of Lagos following the flooding that ravaged the area and other parts of Lagos.

In multiple interviews with victims of the flood incident on Thursday, The PUNCH learnt that the pupil was swept away by the flood while some individuals lost properties after their homes were ravaged by the flood.

A source, who pleaded anonymity,  told our correspondent that Joshua was washed away while returning from school on Wednesday in the Ikosi area of Ketu in Lagos.

The source told our correspondent that the incident occurred when the boy was returning from school alongside his colleagues after the rain.

He added that Joshua was unaware that the flood had washed away a plank used as a bridge over the drainage.

He said, “The plank that was used to bridge the canal was completely covered by water, and they fell into the drainage.

“Residents made efforts to rescue the pupil but Joshua did not survive the tide. His mother has been devastated till this moment.”

A senior police officer at the Ketu Division, who was not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed the tragedy.

The officer said, “It is a sad occurrence. Though the matter was not officially reported, we got wind of the incident and sympathised with the family.”

In another development, a resident in the Aguda area of Lagos identified only as Aluta Mama, told our correspondent that some of her home appliances were submerged.

She added that she and her family members had to leave their home pending the time the flood would abate.

“The impact is heavy. We had to leave home for the flood to subdue. Some of my properties and appliances were submerged in the flood,” Aluta Mama said.

Another resident in the Pen Cinema area of Agege, Lagos State, Anuoluwapo Atanda, disclosed that though she was not affected by the flooding because she lived in a storey building, it affected those living on the ground floor of her house.

“My house is a storey building so the occupants upstairs were not affected but those downstairs woke up to the flooding in their room so they were unable to protect their valuables.

“It was a co-tenant that raised the alarm that everywhere was flooded because it was a bit dark. Their appliances, chairs, and sofas have been outside and the rain has refused to stop.  Someone dumped his bed and got a new one because it was drenched,” Atanda said.

At Whitesand, Isheri Osun in the Ikotun area, residents were still scooping water from their houses on Thursday.

In Ogun, no fewer than 10 communities in the Ifo area were affected by the flooding.

Confirming the numbers of affected communities, the National Emergency Management Agency, in a statement on X.com obtained on Thursday, blamed the downpour on the overflow of a riverbank in the area.

The statement read, “NEMA South West Zonal Office received a distress alert from Ogun State Emergency Management Agency in respect of flood disaster that wreaked havoc in ten communities in Ifo LGA of Ogun State.

“It was observed that the flood incident was as a result of heavy downpour which led to the overflow of river bank leading to the flood.”

Similarly, a resident of Oregun in the Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun State, Victoria Ojelana, said the flood submerged houses in her area, damaging household properties.

    ‘Everywhere flooded’

She said, “As I speak, we are still cleaning everywhere with rags because the flood is still flowing. The flood dug a passage in my toilet and started flowing in, so we repaired the spot this morning to curb that.

“Most residents are indoors because the flood has overtaken the road. My family cannot step out of the house and a lot of electronic appliances are now bad.

“There is a woman beside our house whose fence collapsed under the intensity of the flooding. Whenever there is a downpour, we are always in a panic mode but this time, the flood was worse because it affected everyone. We have been finding it hard to cope with the messy situation,” Ojelana said.

On Thursday, the Special Adviser on Environment to the Lagos State Government, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, urged residents in low-land areas and other parts of the state to register with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency.

Akodu, in an interview with one of our correspondents, maintained that such data would be useful in emergencies.

He said although the government had not set up a temporary shelter or camp for the flood victims, it was still important for them to immediately relocate to upland areas.

He said, “We have not set up that kind of camp, but usually, they understand the cycle, just that sometimes they stay back for too long. The kind of flood that may be coming this time is not the type that we should be daring; that is why we are quickly advising them. This time around, the flood could come all of a sudden and we don’t want them to be surprised by it.

“There is so much in the hands of the government at this time. The idea of creating a camp for them – we will get there – but before we get there, our LASRA data (must be updated).

“Despite all the campaigns for people to get themselves registered so that the government can adequately plan for them, they are still not yielding’; they think such advisories are meant to track them for tax payment.

“This is where such data could have been useful. We have not planned for that but we are advising them as usual to move as they usually do, that they should move early because of the volume (of water) that may be coming this time around.”

Akodu blamed the flooding incident on climate change.
