Apple Music has released her 2022 End-of-the year charts showing the 100 Top songs in the Nigerian music space.
The end-of-year charts on Apple Music are based on how many times songs were played from November 1, 2021 to October 31, 2022.
Asake stole the spotlight
In 2022, Nigerian artists kept winning all over the world, and sounds from the country kept making waves and breaking records. Asake became the face of the street-pop movement.
His songs “Sungba” and “Peace Be Unto You (PBUY)” were at the top of the charts because they mixed modern street culture, traditional Fuji sounds, Yoruba lyrics, and catchy “crowd vocals”.
His first album, “Mr. Money With the Vibe” had the biggest opening day for an African album in Apple Music’s history. Asrake led a wave of artists like T.I. Blaze, Lil Kesh, Zinoleesky and Mohbad to the top of the charts by incorporating South Africa’s Ampiano sub-genre into their music.
