    EPL: Saka, Havertz on target as Arsenal beat Wolves 2-0 to kickoff campaign

    Popular Arsenal kicked off their Premier League campaign with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Wolves, thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz.

    The Gunners continued with their form from last season, which saw them finish second-place.

    After an early dominance in the encounter, Havertz broke the deadlock for Mikel Arteta’s side, following a cross from Saka.

    Despite their early lead, Arsenal struggled to put the game to bed, allowing Wolves to gain ground.

    The visitors came close to equalizing, particularly when debutant Jorgen Strand Larsen’s header forced a brilliant save from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

    Wolves continued to press after the break, with Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha both missing opportunities to level the score.

    However, Arsenal capitalized on Wolves’ poor finishing for the second goal.

    Saka doubled the lead, converting Havertz’s pass with a powerful near-post shot past goalkeeper Jose Sa.

    Raya, named Player of the Match, ensured Arsenal’s clean sheet with a crucial late save from Pablo Sarabia, sealing off all three points for the Gunners.

    A suspect has been reportedly imprisoned following a stabbing incident involving Mounir Nasraoui, father of Barcelona star Lamine Yamal.

    The 38-year-old Nasraoui was attacked by four individuals in Mataro, Catalonia on Wednesday night and sustained multiple stab wounds.

    Nasraoui was rushed to the hospital, where his condition was initially critical.

    However, his health later stabilized, and he is expected to recover.

    Speaking from the hospital, Nasraoui told El Chiringuito that he “was between life and death” during the ordeal.

    The incident led to the arrest of four suspects, who were quickly brought before the court in Catalonia.

    According to El Diario, the Court of Instruction No. 3 of Mataro has decided to imprison one of the accused, while the other three have been released on bail.

    Despite having no prior criminal records, all four suspects are facing charges of attempted murder.

    As part of the bail conditions, the released suspects are prohibited from making any contact with Nasraoui.

    Paris Saint-Germain kicked off the new Ligue 1 season with a 4-1 win over Le Havre, marking the start of post Kylian Mbappe era.

    Despite the final scoreline, the match was dramatic, with PSG’s last three goals coming in the closing minutes.

    The Parisian giants, who have dominated French football with 10 league titles in the past 12 seasons, are in a phase of rebuilding after Mbappé’s high-profile move to Real Madrid this summer.

    With one of the youngest squads in the league, PSG are relying on fresh talent to fill the void left by their former star.

    Luis Enrique:s side took an early lead just three minutes in, courtesy of 23-year-old South Korean forward Lee Kang-in.

    However, their pressing dropped when striker Gonçalo Ramos was forced off with an injury in the 20th minute, leading to the introduction of Randal Kolo Muani.

    Le Havre equalized early in the second half through Gautier Lloris, and nearly took the lead, only for VAR to rule out Josué Casimir’s goal.

    PSG finally regained control late in the match, with Ousmane Dembélé heading them back in front in the 85th minute.

    Youngster Bradley Barcola added a third a minute later, and Kolo Muani sealed the victory with a penalty in stoppage time.

    Another rising star, 19-year-old João Neves, contributed with two assists.

    Despite having additional chances to extend the lead, Liverpool’s two goals were enough to ensure a comfortable victory.

    Napoli’s sporting director, Giovanni Manna, confirmed Osimhen’s intentions, stating, “Victor Osimhen has asked to leave the club. He wants to go.

    “The situation is clear; there were already chances for his exit last summer… We will see in the next 20 days.”

    Osimhen’s departure would mark the end of a successful spell in Naples, where he has scored 76 goals and provided 18 assists in 133 appearances since joining from Lille in 2020.

    Chelsea, who are keen to bolster their attacking options after an underwhelming season, see Osimhen as a top target.

    Despite nearing a deal for Atlético Madrid’s Samu Omorodion, the Blues remain eager to sign Osimhen, according to SunSport.

    If Chelsea succeed in signing Osimhen, it could trigger a swap deal, with Napoli expressing interest in Romelu Lukaku as a potential replacement for the Nigerian forward.

    The games, with the motto “Games Wide Open (French: Ouvrons Grand les Jeux),” were held in the capital of France.

    The Paris Olympics witnessed the participation of 10,714 athletes drawn from 216 countries, with a total of 1,436 medals won.

    Leading the medals table is the United States with a total of 126 while China follows with 91. Both countries, however, had a tie of 40 gold medals.

    Host nation France bagged a total of 64 medals, with 16 golds.

    Kenya is the first African country on the medals table with four gold, two silver and five bronze medals.

    PUNCH analysis revealed that the top 10 countries amassed 40.11 per cent of the total medals at the games.

    The U.S. won the XXXIII edition of the Olympic Games on Sunday in Paris, but it was just by the skin of their teeth.

    They topped the 2024 Games medals table by winning 40 gold medals after the final of the last event of the Games was decided on Sunday.

    But they only finished above China by virtue of winning more silver medals than the Asian giants, scooping 44 while their foes had 27.

    China were the last team apart from the U.S. to top the standings when they did it on home soil at the 2008 Beijing Games.

    The U.S. women’s basketball team helped to seal their country’s dominance by edging hosts France to win the final gold medal of the Games.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Americans also won the most total medals with 126 to China’s 91, after winning 42 bronze medals as against China’s 24.

    Japan were third with 20 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze for a total of 45, while Australia were in fourth place with 18 gold, 19 silver and 16 bronze for a total of 53.

    Hosts France was in fifth place with 16 gold, 26 silver, and 22 bronze, totalling 64.

    However, only 12 African teams made it to the medals table.

    Kenya led the lot after garnering four gold, two silver and five bronze for a total of 11 to finish in 17th place.

    Other African countries which made the medals table include Algeria who were placed joint 39th with two gold and one bronze for a total of three.

    The others are South Africa in joint 44th with a total six medals (1 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze), and Ethiopia in 47th with a total of four (1 gold, 3 silver).

    Egypt and Tunisia were joint 52nd with a total of three medals each, comprising one gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

    Botswana and Uganda were also on joint 55th with two medals each, made up of one gold and one silver medal.

    Morocco was placed 60th with one gold and one bronze for a total two, while Côte d’Ivoire were in 84th place alongside Cape Verde and Zambia with one bronze each.

    NAN reports that Nigeria did not however make the medals table at the Games which had 205 countries participating.

    The next edition of the Games is scheduled for 2028 in Los Angeles in the U.S.
