Man sentenced 7 years for stealing an Android phone

The Ekiti state high court in Ado Ekiti has sentenced a 26-year-old young man, Omodara Dada to seven years imprisonment for stealing an Infinix Hot 9 phone.

According to reports, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye sentenced the young man to prison for stealing a black Infinix Hot 8 phone valued at ₩64,000 and ₩8,000 cash while armed with a knife.

According to reports, the incident happened on the 13th of February 2023. Also, court documents stated that Dada was caught red-handed attempting to steal a plasma television from a hotel room,

The victim, Fakiyesi Tope, who was a hotel manager, recounted his ordeal:

“I woke up to a noise and saw the defendant trying to remove my TV. When I tried to shout, he pulled out a knife and threatened to stab me. I later realized he had taken my phone and ₩8,000 cash.”

In his judgment, Justice Ogunmoye ruled that while the evidence was insufficient to sustain a charge of armed robbery under Section 312 (2) of the Ekiti State Criminal Law, it established burglary under Section 323.

“The evidence proves the lesser offence of burglary beyond reasonable doubt,” Justice Ogunmoye stated.

Dada was sentenced to seven years in prison, effective from the date of his detention.

US returns $52.88m recovered from Diezani’s assets to Nigeria

The Nigerian government has recovered $52.88 million in Galactica assets linked to former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, handed over by the United States on Friday.

According to reports, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, disclosed the recovery during a formal signing ceremony in Abuja.

Fagbemi announced that $50 million of the recovered funds would be directed through the World Bank to support rural electrification projects, while the remaining $2.88 million would be allocated to the International Institute of Justice to strengthen the justice system and support anti-corruption initiatives.

    Diezani Alison-Madueke

“This asset return represents a significant milestone in the partnership between Nigeria and the United States to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law,” Fagbemi stated.

He noted that the recovery aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s pledge to fight corruption and ensure public funds are effectively utilized.

In his remarks, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, emphasized the importance of accountability, urging the Nigerian government to ensure the recovered assets are used transparently for the benefit of its citizens.

“The Ministry of Justice must ensure these funds are utilized effectively and transparently to improve the lives of Nigerians,” Mills said.

  • FG boasts of economic progress, “We’re delivering on our promises”

FG boasts of economic progress, “We’re delivering on our promises”

The Federal Government FG has reiterated its commitment to delivering a stronger economy for Nigeria.

Speaking on Thursday during a briefing with the Senate Committee on Appropriations regarding the 2025 budget, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, highlighted the administration’s progress in implementing key economic reforms. The session also reviewed the performance of the 2024 budget.

According to reports, Edun requested a closed session when questioned about revenue generated from the removal of the petrol subsidy.

    Wale Edun

He credited the country’s fiscal recovery to bold reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, including market-based pricing for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and foreign exchange policies.

These measures, he noted, could help recover up to 5% of previously lost revenue.

“The administration inherited an economy on the brink, but through targeted reforms, we are now on a recovery path. Our focus remains on growing revenues, improving fiscal discipline, and ensuring sustainable economic growth for all Nigerians,” Edun said.

He highlighted the near 100% performance of recurrent revenue in 2024 as a testament to the government’s ability to meet its financial obligations despite economic challenges.

Edun also emphasized the government’s dedication to funding capital expenditures, which has been extended through June 30, 2025.

The Minister pointed to Nigeria’s over 3% GDP growth last year as evidence of the success of the administration’s macroeconomic policies.

“Our macroeconomic reforms have begun to deliver results. With stronger performances from agencies like the Nigeria Customs Service and the Federal Inland Revenue Service, we are witnessing consistent revenue growth, which is essential for funding our development goals,” he stated.

Edun explained that the 2025 budget is designed to build on the achievements of the previous year, with plans to increase the tax-to-GDP ratio and bolster national revenue.

He also reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to maintaining fiscal stability, meeting debt obligations, and fostering inclusive growth through job creation and increased investment.

The Finance Minister assured the Committee that the government’s reforms are paving the way for sustained economic recovery and growth.

He expressed optimism that these efforts would lead to higher growth rates, greater job opportunities, and a more stable economic environment that benefits all Nigerians.

  • FG opens up on hiring foreign mercenaries to tackle insecurity

FG opens up on hiring foreign mercenaries to tackle insecurity

The Nigerian Federal Government FG has reaffirmed its stance against using foreign mercenaries to tackle the nation’s security challenges, describing such measures as unsustainable.

Instead, the government is focusing on fostering partnerships to localize the production of military equipment, particularly through collaborations with China, to minimize dependency on imports and the associated delays.

According to reports, this position was emphasized on Thursday during a joint press conference held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The event featured Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, who was in Nigeria on an official visit to strengthen bilateral relations.

    Yusuf Tuggar

The visit underscores the deepening ties between Nigeria and China, as both countries reiterated their shared commitment to enhancing regional security and driving economic growth through strategic partnerships.

During the briefing, Ambassador Tuggar stated that relying on private military contractors, regardless of their origin, is not a sustainable solution to Nigeria’s security concerns. He highlighted Nigeria’s leadership role in fostering peace and security across Africa and called for cooperative efforts within the continent.

“We are committed to working with partners like China to localize the production of military hardware,” Tuggar said. “This approach will eliminate unnecessary delays and enable us to achieve self-sufficiency in meeting our security needs.” He also stressed the importance of developing both kinetic and non-kinetic military capabilities domestically.

Wang Yi’s visit builds on President Bola Tinubu’s earlier state visit to China in 2024, which paved the way for greater collaboration in economic and political areas. Discussions during the visit included agreements on energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and petrochemical development.

The Chinese Foreign Minister lauded Nigeria’s leadership in Africa and welcomed the nation’s plans to issue panda bonds under the bilateral currency swap agreement, initially established in 2018 between the Central Bank of Nigeria and the People’s Bank of China, with a value of CN„15 billion.

Wang Yi also encouraged Nigeria to explore opportunities for issuing panda bonds—renminbi-denominated bonds in China’s domestic market—highlighting their potential to fund critical infrastructure projects, such as railway modernization.

  • Catholic priest quits after 17 years, embraces marriage, traditional religion

Catholic priest quits after 17 years, embraces marriage, traditional religion

A former Catholic priest, Dr. Echezona Obiagbaosogu with 17 years of service, has announced his resignation from the priesthood to fully embrace African traditional religion.

Now a lecturer in African Traditional Religion at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Obiagbaosogu made this revelation on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, shortly after defending his PhD dissertation titled “Rainmaking and Control in Igbo African Medicine.”

Catholic priest quits after 17 years, embraces marriage, traditional religion

The former priest, who is now married, expressed his deep fascination with African spirituality and the traditional practice of rainmaking.

He emphasized the richness of African heritage, stating that many of its values and resources have been overshadowed by colonial influences.

As part of his journey, Obiagbaosogu spent months studying under a renowned native doctor, delving into the art and intricacies of traditional medicine. His research aims to revive and preserve the cultural and spiritual practices of Africa.

“Life is a process. Things happen, and people begin to look left and right. One important thing is for the person to know themselves. If you understand yourself and remain open to reality, you will begin to make decisions for your life,” Obiagbaosogu said when asked about his resignation.

Former Catholic priest on his transition to traditional religion

former Catholic priest, Dr. Echezona Obiagbaosogu

“I have come to realise that my true calling is to serve my people through the ancient traditions of our ancestors. I was a Catholic priest for 17 years before resigning to embrace the traditional African religion. The topic of my research is ‘Rainmaking and control in Igbo African medicine: A case study of Isieke in Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State,” he said.

I partly lived with my maternal grandfather, who was a traditionalist, while my father was a Christian before he passed away. Though he was a Christian, he still believed in traditional materials. He was an agriculturist with trees around the compound and always brought in new ones, some of which he said were medicinal.

“So, I learned from him to appreciate nature. My background is also significant. I was once a Catholic priest—Rev. Father. I began this research as a priest five years ago and then left the priesthood, so now I am married.

“Everything about this research stems from my curiosity about nature and God. The research reflects my curiosity about spirituality and the nature of God. As a priest, I had the opportunity to work in health sectors, and I understand what health is all about.”

“I conducted this research with the intention of recovering our lost African values. There was one of my father’s friends, and when I was in the seminary, I founded a school called the Society for African Culture

“During that period, we invited my father’s friend to demonstrate that rainmaking was possible. He came and made it rain. This experience led me to investigate it in an academic way.

“My research in rainmaking and control is rooted in finding the truth and understanding how native doctors contribute to preserving African values. I discovered that it is indeed a reality and done by dibia (native doctors). I am not turning my back on God, but rather, I am embracing the divine in a more meaningful and authentic way.”

Obiagbaosogu also shared his thoughts on the relationship between magic, religion, and science, adding that, “Civilisation began with magic, moved to religion, and today we are talking about nanoscience and other fields.

“The white man was able to explore these magical laws, codify them, and call them science. So, science is essentially what was once magic.

“We can also access these magical laws, which we call African magic or religion. It is not the African magic of Nollywood. The African magic of Nollywood is one of the tools used to destroy our culture and values.

“African magic is actually African science, which remains unexplored. We must begin to modify, codify, and document it for posterity.”

  • Earthquake kills 53 in China’s Tibet region

Earthquake kills 53 in China’s Tibet region

Devastating earthquake in China’s remote Tibet region killed at least 53 people and collapsed “many buildings” on Tuesday, state media reported, with tremors also felt in neighbouring Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and parts of India.

Videos published by China’s state broadcaster CCTV showed houses destroyed with walls torn apart.

Rescue workers waded through rubble strewn across the ruins in the aftermath of the earthquake, footage showed, while some gave locals thick blankets to keep warm.

Surveillance images published by CCTV showed people running through a store’s aisles as shelves shook violently, sending objects like toys tumbling to the ground.

In the town of Lhatse, videos geolocated by AFP showed debris scattered in front of streetside eateries.

The powerful quake struck Dingri county with a magnitude of 6.8 near the border with Nepal at 9:05 am (0105 GMT), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). The US Geological Survey reported the tremor as magnitude 7.1.

“Fifty-three people have been confirmed dead and 62 injured as of Tuesday noon, after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Dingri County in the city of Xigaze in Xizang Autonomous Region at 9:05 am Tuesday,” Xinhua news agency said.

Over 1,000 houses have sustained varying degrees of damage, it added.

“Dingri county and its surrounding areas experienced very strong tremors, and many buildings near the epicentre have collapsed,” state broadcaster CCTV said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday emphasised “the full-scale search and rescue efforts, minimizing casualties to the greatest extent possible, properly resettling affected residents, and ensuring their safety and warmth through the winter”, CCTV added.

Xinhua said that “local authorities are reaching out to various townships in the county to assess the impact of the quake”.

Temperatures in Dingri are around minus 8 degrees Celsius (17.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and will drop to minus 18 this evening, according to the China Meteorological Administration.

Disaster relief aid, including cotton tents, quilts and items for high-altitude and frigid areas, had been dispatched by central authorities to areas impacted by the quake, Xinhua said.

The high-altitude county in the Tibet region is home to around 62,000 people and situated on the Chinese side of Mount Everest.

While earthquakes are common in the region, Tuesday’s quake was the most powerful recorded within a 200-kilometre radius in the last five years, the CENC added.

    – ‘Shook quite strongly’ –

As well as Kathmandu, areas around Lobuche in Nepal in the high mountains near Everest were also rattled by the tremor and aftershocks.

“It shook quite strongly here, everyone is awake,” said government official Jagat Prasad Bhusal in Nepal’s Namche region, which lies nearer to Everest.

But no damage or deaths had been reported so far and security forces had been deployed, Nepali Home Minister spokesman Rishi Ram Tiwari said.

Nepal lies on a major geological faultline where the Indian tectonic plate pushes up into the Eurasian plate, forming the Himalayas, and earthquakes are a regular occurrence.

In 2015, nearly 9,000 people died and more than 22,000 were injured when a 7.8-magnitude quake struck Nepal, destroying more than half a million homes.

Some tremors were felt in Bihar state in India but no injuries were reported.

Three people were killed and dozens injured after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck along the mountainous China-Kyrgyzstan border in January last year.

A quake in December 2023 in northwest China killed 148 people and displaced thousands in Gansu province.

That quake was China’s deadliest since 2014, when more than 600 people were killed in southwestern Yunnan province.

In the December 2023 earthquake, subzero temperatures made the aid operation launched in response even more challenging, with survivors huddled around outdoor fires to keep warm.

  • EFCC sacks 27 corrupt officers, probes $400,000 fraud complaint

EFCC sacks 27 corrupt officers, probes $400,000 fraud complaint

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC says it dismissed 27 of its officers last year for misconduct and fraudulent activities.

The anti-graft agency also said it was investigating “a trending $400,000 claim of a yet-to-be-identified supposed staff of the EFCC against a Sectional Head.”

The EFCC spokesman,  Dele Oyewale, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

He said the dismissals followed recommendations from the EFCC Staff Disciplinary Committee, which were ratified by the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.

“In its quest to enforce integrity and rid its fold of fraudulent elements, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission dismissed 27 officers from its workforce in 2024,” Oyewale said. “Their dismissal, following the recommendation of the Staff Disciplinary Committee of the EFCC, was ratified by the Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.”

The statement quoted the EFCC Chairman as reaffirming the commission’s zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, emphasising that no officer is immune to disciplinary action.

He also assured the public that all allegations against EFCC staff would be thoroughly investigated, including a trending claim involving $400,000 against a Sectional Head by a supposed EFCC staff member.

“The core values of the commission remain sacrosanct and will always be upheld,” Olukoyede said, reiterating the commission’s commitment to combating corruption and ensuring accountability at all levels.

In addition, the EFCC issued a warning to the public about impersonators and blackmailers exploiting the name of its chairman to extort money from high-profile suspects under investigation.

“The commission also wishes to alert the public to the sinister activities of impersonators and blackmailers using the name of its Executive Chairman to extort money from high-profile suspects being investigated by the EFCC,” the statement read.

The EFCC revealed that two members of an alleged syndicate, Ojobo Joshua and Aliyu Hashim, were recently arraigned before Justice Jude Onwuebuzie of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.

The pair allegedly contacted a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Mr. Mohammed Bello-Koko, and demanded $1m to secure a “soft landing” in a non-existent investigation.

The commission noted that similar criminal elements are still at large and urged the public to report such individuals.

Oyewale further emphasised that EFCC Chairman is a man of integrity who cannot be influenced by monetary offers.

“Olukoyede remains a man of integrity who cannot be swayed by monetary influences. The public is enjoined to report such disreputable elements to the commission.”

The EFCC is also aware of attempts to blackmail its officers through unscrupulous means.

“Suspects under investigation for economic and financial crimes, who have failed to compromise their investigators, often resort to blackmail. These blackmailers should not be given any attention,” Oyewale added.

Loan app sparks outrage by posting 87 debtors’ photos online

A loan app, Delinquent Loans, has sparked controversy after sharing photos of 87 debtors online in a bold attempt to recover unpaid loans.

The incident came to light through a series of TikTok videos posted by the app.

Across three separate videos, the platform uploaded pictures of the debtors, each captioned, “Please settle your loans,” as a public reminder to repay their debts.

The videos, which began trending on Saturday, drew widespread attention and mixed reactions from social media users.

Many people used various platforms to express their opinions on the app’s unconventional approach.

A user, King, who identifies as #KingSuleiman27 on X (formerly Twitter), commented, “Has anyone seen the video posted by a loan app featuring pictures of 87 debtors owing them? You better check it out to make sure your picture isn’t among them ooo!”

Prince Olugbade, who tweets as #latmos997, wrote, “As they don post their pictures, make them go collect the money from the general public wey view am, or post am for YouTube use the views settle the debt.”

FaVƍuRℱ, who identifies as fhavourabia, argued, “Actually, if we have a functioning government, these people should be sued for defamation.”

Agbalaka, who identifies as #CroBender, noted, “Taking money from shylocks comes with regrettable consequences.”

Other users highlighted the consequences of defaulting on loans.

Smiles Ebony, who tweets as #smileebony, explained, “There’s something all these people don’t understand. After you default on any loan, you will be reported to the credit bureau, and this will affect anyone.”

Emma, who identifies as #Emmabest, raised concerns, stating, “Most of these persons are not aware of this loan. Suddenly, they receive a call asking them to pay back the money they borrowed.”

The loan app’s public shaming strategy has sparked a debate about privacy, ethics, and the legality of such practices. While some support the need for debt recovery, others criticise the method as an infringement on individual rights.
