Nigerian Army marks 162 years, encourages youth to join military

TheĀ Nigerian Army has marked its 162nd anniversary with a strong appeal to the nation’s youth to embrace military service as a career and a patriotic duty.

The call was made by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Maj.-Gen. Godwin Ajose, during a sensitisation event at Yahaya Abdulkarim Model Primary and Secondary School inĀ SokotoĀ on Tuesday. He was represented by Brig.-Gen. Aliyu Musa.

Speaking at the event, Ajose described the Nigerian Army as a pillar of national unity, pride, and professionalism, stressing that the military remains committed to defending the country’s territorial integrity and protecting its citizens.

ā€œOur mission is defend the nation, root out terrorism, and uphold the peace and security that every Nigerian deserves. Our strategies are focused, and our commitment is unwavering,ā€Ā Ajose said.

Ajose encouraged young Nigerians to seize the numerous career opportunities the Army offers, noting that recruitment is open to eligible individuals from all backgrounds, regardless of tribe or religion.

The GOC also highlighted the ongoing Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2025, which features a series of activities, including prayers, symbolic events, and community outreach programmes aimed at strengthening the bond between the military and civilians.

ā€œThese celebrations are not just ceremonial they are moments of reflection, thanksgiving, and recommitment to service. We honor our fallen heroes, our serving personnel, and the unity that binds us,ā€Ā Ajose added.

Also speaking, Lt.-Col. Nuhu Yahaya, Acting Director of Education Services, 8 Division, explained the recruitment process for both commissioned and non-commissioned officers, urging students to see the military as more than a job, but a vital contribution to nation-building.

In her remarks, the school’s Principal, Hajia Murjanatu Muhammad, and Head Teacher, Hajia Lubabatu Musa, commended the Army for the initiative, saying the interaction would inspire students to consider roles in national defence.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Chairperson of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) 8 Division, Mrs. Meg Ndidi Ajose, hailed the role of women in supporting the military, describing them as the ā€œunseen strength behind the uniform.ā€

ā€œThe strength behind the uniform is a woman. We are the caregivers, the moral compass, the voices of peace. We bridge the gap between the barracks and civilian life. We nurture, we educate, and we heal,ā€Ā Mrs. Ajose said.

She also emphasised the importance of women in promoting hygiene, education, and moral values within military communities and society at large.

  • Owolabi Salis recounts his journey to space, ā€œI floated like a birdā€

Owolabi Salis recounts his journey to space, ā€œI floated like a birdā€

Lawyer, financial consultant, and spiritual thinker, Owolabi Salis has made history as the first Nigerian to travel toĀ space, joining Blue Origin’s NS-33 mission.

In an interview, Salis opened up about the motivation behind his space trip, the cost, and the revelations he encountered during the voyage.

Salis explained that his journey was more spiritual than scientific. He described Earth as ā€œPlanet 3,ā€ suspended by the sun’s beam and revolving at high speed—something he finds deeply mysterious.

His goal was to explore deeper questions about the soul, its origin, and its purpose.

He said he wrote to Blue Origin, expressing his interest in conducting research on spiritualism.

After paying a significant, undisclosed amount—estimated to be around $2 million—he underwent intensive training and secured the necessary approvals from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

Although the initial flight on June 21 was delayed due to high winds, the trip eventually took place on June 29. Despite the risks involved, Salis said he felt no fear, thanks to his deep spiritual grounding.

During the flight, he experienced weightlessness for about three minutes.

He described floating like a bird and being awed by the sight of Earth suspended in darkness.

He said the view confirmed his belief in a divine presence beyond religious texts.

ā€œFrom what I saw, the Almighty Lord of the Universe is not the same as what some religious books are telling us,ā€ he said.

Salis revealed that he has visited over 120 countries, the North and South Poles, and other extreme locations, which he considers spiritual pilgrimages.

His next goal is to explore isolated islands by boat, drawn by their volcanic origins and natural beauty.

Although he is retired, Salis said he finances his trips through savings and past work as a prominent lawyer and civil rights advocate in New York.

He has also contested multiple times to become the governor of Lagos State but expressed no regret over the failed attempts.

He called for reforms in Nigeria’s political system, advocating for a shift from what he calls ā€œassisted personality politicsā€ to a more inclusive model he terms ā€œequitocracy.ā€

He also urged the Nigerian government to implement local policing to improve grassroots governance and public safety.

Salis believes that space travel will become more accessible in the future and is already recommending more Nigerians for similar opportunities with Blue Origin.

Lady passes away after spending night at man’s house

NigerianĀ manĀ has been detained by the police after aĀ ladyĀ came to visit him and spent the night at hisĀ house only to pass away.

This is contained in a post made available on a popular social media platform, X, formally.

The post shared by a user, @itsleeswhag, confirm the incident happened to his distant cousin who is now in the custody of the police.

Detailing the event, he mentioned that his distant cousin is in the custody of the police over an incident involving a lady.

A lady came to visit him and spent the night only for her to die before the next day.

His statement:Ā ā€œMy distant cousin has been in police detention for over a month now because a woman came over to his place to spend the night and he woke up the next day to discover that the lady is dead.ā€

He mentioned that he suggested an autopsy to be done but the lady’s family is yet to respond,Ā ā€œI suggested the autopsy too, we haven’t gotten a feedback from the lady’s family.ā€

As the post made it’s way online, concerned individuals stormed the comment page of the post to share their thoughts.

    See some reactions below:Ā

@Jeffosky1:Ā ā€œThis is serious. It’s sad that the circumstances point to your cousin as a suspect but in grounding an action for manslaughter, there must be a nexus b/w the mens rea (intention) & actus reus (the wrongful act). The result of the autopsy is also important to prove cause of death.ā€

@Olori_Seun1:Ā ā€œHe need a very good lawyer and AUTOPSY has to be done and make una pray well well say no be suffocation.ā€

@OlanmaDiamond:Ā ā€œWhy haven’t police carried out autopsy, to know the cause of her death and stop tormenting him?ā€

@D_Ministar:Ā ā€œThe prosecution would need to prove beyond reasonable doubt that he caused the death intentionally or through negligence. A good criminal defense lawyer should be able to challenge this and either secure bail or push for the case to move forward properly through the courts.ā€

@Adx0G:Ā ā€œThe law said he will do jail except he has a concrete evidence that he doesn’t have a hand in it or he should get a good lawyer and autopsy should be done on the dead body.ā€

@Misturrah:Ā ā€œThis is one thing i fear the most because how will he explain it šŸ¤¦šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø in a sane country proper investigation would be done.ā€

AĀ graduateĀ of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Jamiu Bashola, has allegedly been detained after requesting validation of hisĀ JAMBĀ result andĀ admission status.

Jamiu, an orphan, was admitted into FUTA in 2018 to study Civil Engineering after writing and passing the 2017 UTME and Post-UTME.

He reportedly received admission letters from both the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and FUTA, and has all supporting documents.

After seven years of dedication and hardship, he successfully graduated with a CGPA of 4.41. However, his academic journey has now been called into question.

According to a viral post shared on X, formerly Twitter, Jamiu approached JAMB to validate his records, only to be allegedly detained by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and officials of JAMB.
