Fernando Santos has quit his position as the head coach of Portugal after the team crashed out of the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2022.

The Portuguese side had suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat at the hands of Morocco in the competition; Santos’ decision to step down was a shock to many as he has had an impressive record with the side.

Santos has managed the Portuguese side in a total of 109 games and has seen his side score over 200 goals, recorded 69 wins and has also won 2 trophies. With no official confirmation as to why Santos stepped down, many can not help but speculate that the world cup loss and the benching of Ronaldo might have played a role.

The Portuguese FA confirmed his resignation in a post that read:

“It was an honour to have a coach and a person like Fernando Santos at the head of the national team.

The FPF thanks Fernando Santos and his technical team for the services provided over eight unique years and believes that this thanks is also made on behalf of the Portuguese people.

The FPF board will now begin the process of choosing the next national coach.”
