The Africa Cup of Nations 2023 CAF organizers have mandated a rematch of the Nigeria vs. Ivory Coast AFCON 2023 final, as the hosts entered a player who was ineligible.
The player who has not yet been named was sitting on the bench for Côte d’Ivoire, which is against CAF regulations concerning AFCON. The following rules state:
“Any nation discovered to have fielded an ineligible player in the championship game faces match cancellation or expulsion.”
In the end, the hosts defeated Nigeria 2–1 thanks to a goal by Haller.
The CAF’s statement on the subject says:
Ivory Coast fielded an illegible player, so we have already informed them that the match needs to be replayed. We believed that a repeat would be more appropriate than giving Nigeria the trophy. Later today, we will announce the final’s time and date.
