  • FUTA graduate detained after 7 years in school as JAMB calls admission ‘fake’

FUTA graduate detained after 7 years in school as JAMB calls admission ‘fake’

A graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Jamiu Bashola, has allegedly been detained after requesting validation of his JAMB result and admission status.

Jamiu, an orphan, was admitted into FUTA in 2018 to study Civil Engineering after writing and passing the 2017 UTME and Post-UTME.

He reportedly received admission letters from both the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and FUTA, and has all supporting documents.

After seven years of dedication and hardship, he successfully graduated with a CGPA of 4.41. However, his academic journey has now been called into question.

According to a viral post shared on X, formerly Twitter, Jamiu approached JAMB to validate his records, only to be allegedly detained by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and officials of JAMB.

Despite his documentation and academic record, JAMB allegedly declared his admission “fake,” rendering him unable to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) or seek employment.

In the words of his friend: “JAMB, DSS & NPF detained my friend because he asked them to validate his JAMB result and admission. He didn’t cheat the system. He worked for everything. For 7 years, Jamiu struggled through school like many of us, particularly as an orphan.”

“Now his hopes are dashed. After seven long years of sleepless nights and burning midnight candles. @JAMBHQ says his admission is fake. Now he can’t go for his youth service. He can’t apply for jobs.”

He’s stuck. A degree he earned through blood and sweat is being treated like it never happened. We know Jamiu. We saw him every day for 7 years. We are witnesses to his journey. This is unfair. This is heartbreaking. We are speaking now because Jamiu deserves better. He deserves to be heard. He deserves justice.”

    NAPTIP declares Speed Darlington wanted

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has declared Nigerian entertainer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlingtonwanted over alleged offences including rape, cyberbullying, and cyberstalking.

The agency made the announcement via its official Instagram handle on Friday afternoon, urging anyone with credible information on his whereabouts to contact them immediately.

  • Dangote — Only Africa is experiencing real growth, Europe depends on us

Dangote — Only Africa is experiencing real growth, Europe depends on us

President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has asserted that Africa is currently the only continent experiencing true economic growth, emphasising that Europe’s future progress is now closely linked to Africa’s continued development.

Dangote made the remarks on Friday during the 32nd Annual Meeting of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), which was being held in Abuja.

The event, themed “Building the Future on Decades of Resilience”, drew over 6,000 delegates from across the continent and around the world.

“Let us make our continent a productive continent. We’re the only continent that has actually had growth. If you look at it today, Europe, with respect to them, there is no growth in Europe. They’ve reached a certain point … they need Africa to grow,” Dangote stated.

Calling on African governments to prioritise local investors, Dangote stressed that the key to attracting international investors lies in supporting domestic ones first.

“The majority of African countries keep going around looking for foreign investors. But foreign investors don’t come that easily. You need to encourage domestic investors when they are doing well. That becomes the invitation for international investors,” he said.

The industrialist, widely regarded as Africa’s richest man, emphasised that the responsibility of transforming the continent lies with Africans themselves.

“We African champions should know that we are the only people who can make Africa great. Nobody will do that for us. The job of people like us is not about amassing wealth. It’s about creating wealth. We can actually turn Africa into a heaven in the next five years. It doesn’t take time. Like I keep saying: You need to think big, and then you grow big,” he said.

  • Yahaya Bello seeks medical trip abroad amid ₦80.2bn fraud case

Yahaya Bello seeks medical trip abroad amid ₦80.2bn fraud case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opposed an application by former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, seeking to travel abroad for medical treatment.

The matter came up on Thursday, June 27, 2025, before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja during Bello’s ongoing trial over an alleged ₦80.2 billion money laundering case.

Bello’s lawyer, J.B. Daudu, SAN, urged the court to consider his client’s health, noting that he had not left Nigeria in over eight years and now requires urgent medical attention.

He said the request was backed by a medical report and a letter from a consultant cardiologist. He also asked for the release of Bello’s passport, which was submitted as part of his bail conditions.

Daudu argued that the defendant has no criminal history abroad and promised he would return before the end of August. “My lord can even specify a return date,” he told the court.

EFCC’s lead counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, opposed the request, describing it as an abuse of court process. He noted that similar applications had been filed in other courts and accused Bello of forum shopping.

Pinheiro said the application was technically defective because the sureties were not informed or included, raising concerns about their responsibility if Bello fails to return.

He also described the health concerns as minor and treatable in Nigeria. “He says he has low potassium; bananas and pawpaw will handle that,” he said.

The prosecution added that Bello is under international watch and risks arrest if he leaves the country. “He could be ‘Hushpuppied’ from Dubai,” Pinheiro warned.

Daudu responded that the red notice had lapsed after Bello’s arraignment and insisted the court should use its discretion to allow the trip.

During the session, cross-examination of EFCC’s fourth witness, Aryan Mashelia Bata of Zenith Bank, continued. The witness clarified he was not harassed by Bello’s aides but had only struggled to find a seat in court.

Justice Nwite adjourned the trial to July 3 and 4, and set July 21, 2025, for ruling on the travel application.
