Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has announced that the upcoming 6,000-capacity Edo Arena will be named after afrobeats star, Rema.

The announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony for the arena, held on Wednesday in Benin City.

Rema, who was in his hometown for a homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium, participated in the ceremony by laying the first block of the new arena.

The governor, in his remarks, expressed his delight in having the internationally acclaimed artist present for this significant event.

“It was a pleasure to have our global music icon, Rema, join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, to be named ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City,” Obaseki shared via his social media platform, X, following the event.

Governor Obaseki further explained that the Edo Arena is designed to be a versatile venue, capable of hosting a variety of events including concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other large gatherings.

He emphasized that the arena would serve as a catalyst for tourism, attracting visitors to experience the rich culture of Edo State, and, in turn, creating employment opportunities for the youth.

Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, has consistently celebrated his Edo roots through his music.

His recent hit, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, pays homage to Benin City and the legacy of the ancient Benin Empire.

Veteran Nollywood actor Yusuf Olorungbebe has sadly passed away following a prolonged battle with a severe illness.

The actor reportedly spent his final days on life support before succumbing to his condition.

The news of his passing was shared by actress Foluke Daramola on August 28, 2024, through her official Instagram page.

In her emotional announcement, Daramola conveyed the sorrowful update to her followers.

She wrote:

“We lost Yusuf Olorungbebe… We submit to God’s Will. Thank You Everyone!”

Earlier in the week, Daramola had appealed to the public for financial support to cover Olorungbebe’s medical expenses.

She had posted a video on Instagram showing the actor in the hospital and urged for contributions

“Please, no amount is too small for him to live; your support will go a very long way,” she wrote.

A 36-year-old lady identified only as Abiola, has been confirmed dead while undergoing a buttocks enlargement procedure at a clinic in the Lekki-Phase 1 area of Lagos State.

Our correspondent learnt on Wednesday that the incident occurred around 3 pm on Monday.

PUNCH Metro reports that a buttock enlargement procedure, commonly known as a Brazilian Butt Lift, is a cosmetic surgery that involves removing fat from other parts of the body and injecting it into the buttocks to achieve a rounder and fuller shape.

A police source, who requested to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the incident, told our correspondent that the woman had left her home in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, Ibeju Lekki area of the state, and instructed her driver to take her to the clinic for the operation.

Upon arrival at the clinic, our correspondent learnt that the clinic owner instructed a nurse to administer an injection to the young woman.

However, shortly after receiving the injection, it was gathered that Abiola reportedly lost consciousness and began gasping for breath.

To address the situation and prevent further complications, the deceased was rushed to a hospital in Lekki Phase 1, where she was confirmed dead.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, noting that a suspect linked to the crime was arrested on Tuesday.

Hundeyin said, “The private driver of the deceased reported the incident to the Maroko division. Our officers visited the scene and the body was sent to a public morgue for an autopsy. The nurse who injected the deceased has been arrested and an investigation is ongoing.”
