“This is injustice. They have bullied him for over 3 years .Lagos state please come into this before it gets messy .Why are they holding IVD ?”,She added.

  • NIWA — Real reason for Junior Pope’s tragic boat accident

NIWA — Real reason for Junior Pope’s tragic boat accident

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has revealed that human error, not mechanical failure, was responsible for the tragic boat mishap that claimed the lives of Nollywood actor Junior Pope and four others on the Anam River in Anambra State in April 2024.

NIWA’s Managing Director, Bola Oyebamiji, disclosed during a multi-modal transportation stakeholders forum held in Abuja on Thursday, while addressing concerns over recurring safety lapses on Nigeria’s inland waterways.

Oyebamiji dismissed speculation that mechanical faults or environmental factors caused the accident, stating instead that passengers on board had deliberately disregarded basic safety regulations, including refusing to wear life jackets provided to them.

“It was not mechanical failure, not impediments in the water or weather challenges, but purely a flagrant disregard for rules and regulations guiding movement on the inland waterways,” Oyebamiji said.

He stressed that such avoidable behaviour continues to undermine NIWA’s safety efforts, and called on all waterway users to cooperate with authorities in promoting safety awareness nationwide.

The forum, which brought together key industry stakeholders, also featured notable participants including the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the Director-General of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, the Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, and Air Peace CEO, Allen Onyema, among others.

Actor Junior Pope Odonwodo, along with four crew members, tragically lost their lives when their boat capsized around Cable Point on the River Niger in Asaba, Delta State, while returning from the set of the movie “Another Side of Life”, produced by Adanma Luke.

  • NCC shuts down moviebox.ng on piracy, vows crackdown on others

NCC shuts down moviebox.ng on piracy, vows crackdown on others

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), has successfully secured the suspension of MovieBox.ng, a notorious website accused of illegally streaming pirated movies, music, and live sports.

In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ijeoma Egbunike, announced that the website was taken down on July 20, 2025, as confirmed by the Commission’s Director-General, Dr. John Asein.

Dr. Asein noted that the action is part of a renewed crackdown on online piracy under the commission’s “Stand Together Against Online Piracy (STOP)” campaign, and has received broad support from stakeholders in Nigeria’s film, music, and broadcast industries.

“They use multiple mirror domains to access and promote pirated content, with domain histories linked to known piracy operations,” Asein said, describing the tactics used by MovieBox.ng to evade takedowns.

He praised NiRA for its prompt cooperation in suspending the domain and called on internet service providers, registrars, and intermediaries to take swift action on future takedown requests, in line with provisions of the Copyright Act, 2022.

The NCC disclosed that it is actively monitoring and working to disable other mirror sites and fallback domains associated with MovieBox.ng, to disrupt the broader piracy network.

The commission also issued a public advisory, warning users against patronizing illegal streaming platforms. Apart from violating copyright laws, such sites often expose users to malware, identity theft, and financial scams.
