  • Nigeria’s $60bn bullet train to link Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt

Nigeria’s $60bn bullet train to link Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt

Nigeria is set to embark on an ambitious infrastructure train project that will see the construction of a 4,000-kilometre high-speed rail line, popularly referred to as a bullet train, alongside gas development initiatives.

The project will be executed by De-Sadel Nigeria Limited in partnership with China Liancai Petroleum Investment Holdings Limited, and is expected to be completed within 36 months of commencement.

At a briefing in Abuja, Samuel Uko, Chief Executive Officer of De-Sadel Nigeria Limited, presented a $60 billion proof of funds to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume. He explained that the high-speed rail will cover four major cities, Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt, with construction phased to allow portions of the network to become operational before completion.

“The 1,600 kilometres that cover the country’s four major cities will take us 36 months to build. But we won’t wait until the 36th month. As we progress through the states, residents of completed sections will begin to enjoy the speed train,” Uko said.

He disclosed that the funding will come from the Asian Development Investment Bank, with the first phase estimated at $55 billion. According to him, the project received almost 90% of the necessary approvals under the current administration, after nearly a decade of planning.

Highlighting the link between gas development and the rail project, Uko noted that energy infrastructure is critical:

“You cannot develop high-speed rail without developing the gas aspect of the economy. The raw material for high-speed rail is power, and the raw material for power is gas. We must expand our gas sector to power this transformative project.”

In response, SGF George Akume described the proposal as a welcome development and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to scrutinising the proof of funds in line with global best practices.

“This administration is business-friendly, but we must ensure that partnerships are reliable, credible, and beneficial to all parties. The $60 billion proof of funds submitted will be critically reviewed to guarantee the viability and timelines of the bullet train project,” Akume said.

If approved, the high-speed rail line is expected to revolutionise transportation, boost industrialisation, and strengthen Nigeria’s gas economy, positioning the country as a major hub for modern rail transport in Africa.

  • Trump says as talks with Putin hit deadlock, “No deal until there’s a deal”

Trump says as talks with Putin hit deadlock, “No deal until there’s a deal”

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday wrapped up a high-stakes summit in Alaska aimed at securing a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war, but the meeting ended without a formal agreement.

Speaking after more than two and a half hours of talks at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Trump described the discussions as “extremely productive,” saying “many points” had been agreed upon. However, he cautioned, “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.”

Putin, for his part, spoke of an “agreement” during the joint press conference, though neither leader offered specifics.

Notably absent from the Alaska summit was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose role Trump later emphasized.

“It’s really up to President Zelenskyy to get it done,” Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity after the summit. “One or two pretty significant items are still left, but I think they can be reached. And I would also say the European nations have to get involved a little bit, but it’s up to President Zelenskyy.”

Trump confirmed he would brief NATO leaders and call Zelenskyy directly, adding that he still plans to hold a trilateral meeting with Putin and the Ukrainian president in the coming weeks.

Pressed on his advice to Zelenskyy, Trump was blunt: “Make the deal. Gotta make the deal, yeah. Look, Russia is a very big power, and they’re not.”

Neither Trump nor Putin took questions from the hundreds of reporters at the press conference, instead quickly shaking hands before leaving the stage.

The U.S. president also indicated that any decisions on sanctions or consequences for Russia would be delayed, saying, “Because of what happened today, I don’t have to think about it for two or three weeks.”

Russia hits Ukraine with 85 drones, missile hours after Trump-Putin meeting

Country, Russia has reportedly launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine with 85 drones and a ballistic missile, Ukraine’s air force said Saturday, just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump concluded their summit in Alaska.

The meeting, billed as a potential breakthrough toward ending the war, ended Friday without a ceasefire agreement.

Ukraine’s military said the overnight strikes began late on August 15 — the same day as the Trump-Putin talks — and continued into the early hours of August 16.

According to officials, Moscow launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile along with 85 Iranian-made Shahed drones, targeting several regions near the frontline.

Kyiv reported that its air defenses intercepted 61 of the drones, though attacks still hit four different regions.

The strike came as Russian state media reported that Moscow had also begun construction on Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant, a project seen as part of Russia’s bid to expand influence in Central Asia.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not yet commented publicly on the Alaska summit, where Trump and Putin pledged “progress” but offered no concrete steps toward peace.

Russia’s invasion, launched in February 2022, has stretched into its fourth year, leaving tens of thousands dead and millions displaced.

  • Corper Raye to NYSC: “I don’t need your certificate to succeed”

Corper Raye to NYSC: “I don’t need your certificate to succeed”

Embattled Lagos state corps member, Ushie Rita popularly known as Raye has responded defiantly to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over its decision to withhold her Certificate of National Service, saying her life remains fulfilling without it.

During a live TikTok session on her official page, Rita accused the NYSC of trying to appear “unshakeable” while alleging that some of its officials were guilty of breaking the same rules they enforce.

“I did not have that certificate before, yet my life is great. NYSC insists they are not giving me the certificate. NYSC is trying to prove they are unshakeable, whereas their own people are the ones breaking the rules. I am no longer interested in the certificate,” she said.

When asked whether she would comply with the two-month service extension imposed by the NYSC, she declined to give a direct answer.

The NYSC had earlier refuted claims circulating on social media that Rita was being denied her certificate because of critical remarks she made about the government.

The scheme described the allegations as “entirely unfounded,” stating that the sanction was based on “valid disciplinary reasons.”

According to the NYSC, Rita is among 131 corps members whose certificates were withheld for various infractions.

The management explained that her service year was extended by two months for failing to attend the April 2025 biometric clearance exercise, a penalty it said was in accordance with the NYSC bye-laws.

BBNaijaDay16 : A sombre Monday mood takes over the house

The Big Brother (BBNaijaDay16) house started the week with heavy hearts after Sabrina’s exit, turning Monday into a gloomy day filled with quiet moments and honest talks.

The housemates woke up in high spirits this morning, energised and ready to tackle whatever the day might bring. Smiles were abundant, and the usual morning hustle was alive with chatter and laughter.

    Housemates.

But as the hours slipped by, a noticeable shift took hold and the once lively atmosphere began to fade, replaced by a heavy and uneasy stillness. Sabrina’s unexpected departure due to medical reasons cast a profound shadow over the house, leaving many unsettled and visibly downhearted.

The usual bursts of laughter and playful banter grew scarce, and even the most energetic corners of the house felt subdued, as if the weight of the news had sapped the collective spirit. Mide said she hopes the mood in the house will eventually change.

Amidst this heavy mood, Jason Jae and Dede found a quiet moment to have a heartfelt conversation about their friendship. Jason Jae opened up about the complexities of their bond, while he deeply values what they’ve built, there are times when he feels Dede isn’t quite there for him in the way he needs, especially when the pressures of the game becomes overwhelming.

He shared how he tends to retreat into himself during those moments of loneliness, even though he makes a conscious effort to be a pillar of support for others around him.

Their talk was raw, exposing the vulnerability that often hides beneath the surface in Biggie’s house. It ended on a tender note, with both admitting they missed the closeness they once had.

Mondays are for the Head of House challenger and after intense competition and heated battles, Tracy fought hard and managed to keep the crown on her side. She remains Week 3’s official Head of House.

This week, housemates have been split into two groups and will compete for buying power throughout the week.
